How It Works

This site offers a full year’s worth of Algebra 1 lessons including slides for the interactive whiteboard. Slides are offered in Keynote (for Mac) and Powerpoint. Slides also include teacher notes and answers to questions. The lessons are also offered in PDF form. Each week can be downloaded separately and includes handouts. Tags are included with each week’s activities to make it easier to find other lessons with similar topics.

In the Classroom

Use the lessons on this site as a resource to current classroom topics. Dan Meyer is well-known for his math teaching methods and many lessons include hands-on, problem-solving activities which can be incorporated into any curriculum.

Business Insider Chart of the Day

How It Works

Find a new chart each day, based on real world events in different formats. Some days include more than one graph! The newer charts are shown first. Older charts are available on the site by following the "older" link. Topics vary from world news to sports to economics and more. There is a great variety of topics and chart types. When you click on the chart, a new page opens containing the chart and a description with difficult vocabulary underlined. Click on a word to learn the definition. You can also sign up to receive the daily chart by email.

In the Classroom

Share a daily chart on your interactive whiteboard or projector and have students recreate the chart into a different format (bar chart to pie chart or line graph). Have students use a tool such as Hohli <a href="/single.cfm?id=12501">reviewed here</a>. Ask students to analyze information included on the daily chart as a math journal entry. Create a class chart comparing student information to the daily chart provided. Use the daily chart as a class warm-up - discuss trends, information provided, information not included that might be useful, etc. Social Studies teachers may want to use the charts as a tie-in to current events. Reading teachers charged with teaching about charts as part of informational texts will find a treasure trove of examples here, especially as prep for BIG reading tests.

How It Works

See beautiful, visual representations of mathematical concepts. The site is divided by topic such as plane curves, space curves, conformal maps (with Algebraic functions), fractals and chaos, and polyhedra. Be sure not to miss the Mathematical Art Gallery - this portion contains links to several different artists’ pages with images of their art created using mathematics concepts such as symmetry. Each artist also explains a little about their background and work providing an interesting look into their thought processes.

In the Classroom

Display this site on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) to demonstrate representations of mathematical figures being taught in class. Use this site to combine art and math in your own classroom. Challenge students to create their own artwork after viewing examples. Have them share the steps they took in creating their artwork by using a presentation tool such as Prezi <a href="/single.cfm?id= 10801">reviewed here.</a>

How It Works

This free tool is designed to help high school students prepare for state standardized testing, better understand college admissions and financial planning, and generally help prepare for their futures. Preparation for these types of exams can greatly increase scores, so why not use a free, already created tool. Sign up as a student, teacher, or parent/mentor. A logged-in user can access state standardized test preparations, SAT and ACT practice tests, flashcards for ACT and SAT test preparation, Zero Hour Threat (a cool video game to help increase ACT and SAT scores as part of the college entrance process), and college planning tips.

In the Classroom

Use this in junior and senior level courses to help students who are college bound prepare for SAT and ACT exams. It saves time and helps kids, no one can argue with those advantages. Try using this with younger high school (or even middle school) aged students in a gifted program to provide enrichment and early practice for early test takers. Be certain to provide this link on your class website for students to access at home.

How It Works

Use this interactive website to show scientific data about the Oceans of the World. The site uses Google Earth. Don’t have Google Earth? Launch it by clicking the title of this <a href="/single.cfm?id=10268">TeachersFirst review</a>, or request it from your school tech department--using this site as an example of why you need it! Manipulate the sea surface temperature, sea surface height, chlorophyll levels, and ocean wind speeds by clicking on the appropriate checkbox. (Be sure to click the box to show the legend bar as well.)

In the Classroom

Choose a parameter to display, such as wind speed. It is best to choose only one topic (data set) at a time and be sure to instruct students to uncheck previous boxes before choosing a new one. Use as an inquiry activity to look at various parameters around the globe and ask questions about what they see. For example, Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly shows areas of the oceans that are warming and some that are cooling more than others. Provide time for students to spin the globe and zoom in to look at where various changes are occurring and make observations. Enhance student learning by bringing these observations to light in class using Padlet, <a href="/single.cfm?id=10007">reviewed here</a>, and brainstorm why the phenomenon exists. If you have an interactive whiteboard, display the Padlet so that students can see theirs and others ideas as they add their observations to the board as they make discoveries. Then, create columns in your Padlet to have students discuss and sort their statements into "proven" and "unproven" columns in the Padlet displayed on your IWB. Research what has already been demonstrated about warming and cooling as well as the potential impacts it may have. Compare these changes with other parameters such as chlorophyll to understand producers and their ocean environment.

In the Classroom

Use these alone as a demonstration or as an introductory activity for inquiry or other laboratory activities. Great for use with club activities or other events. Allow students the opportunity to use these in an individual inquiry for a more personal learning of biological concepts. Challenge students to create a multimedia or conventional display of the information learned. Have students create impressive word clouds about the research they have completed using Word It Out <a href="/single.cfm?id=10707">reviewed here</a>.

How It Works

This is a great source for simple, short, and interesting children’s stories. The international focus draws the attention of a variety of readers. The display opening page has ten stories of about two pages each, but there are over 10 other pages all containing an equal number of stories. These are "text only" reading stories and some are rather difficult to follow, as there are advertisements throughout the page.

In the Classroom

Keep this site in mind when you have a few minutes at the end of the day. Read one together and then set your students at computers in pairs to take turns reading aloud to each other.

This site offers several interesting interactives for practicing math concepts at the elementary level. Many games go beyond the standard rote-type practice and involve critical thinking skills. For example, <i>Beads on a String</i> asks you to create a bead necklace using a pattern, but then asks that bead number 102 be blue adding difficulty to the challenge. Other activities involve estimation, money, logic, and symmetry. Activities can be sorted by age (5-12).rn<B>Parts of this site appear in Dutch and you may have to simply hit the "translate" button to see the instruction in English</B>.
