Blog Divided

6-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://housedivided.dickinson.edu/sites/blogdivided/ Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:49 share

How It Works

This blog was created and is maintained by Dickinson College (in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, just north of Gettysburg and the Mason-Dixon Line) for those teaching about the American Civil War era. The site is indexed by theme and category, making it easy to search for information and resources related to topics from slavery to science and technology to religion. Not limited to information about battles, soldiers or generals, the site offers commentary about the culture and social issues of the mid-nineteenth century. There are links to other resources and projects maintained by Dickinson College and others.

In the Classroom

While the site might be useful to students doing higher level research or working on a National History project, teachers are the principal audience. If this is a passion of yours, add it to your RSS feed or bookmark it and add to your own knowledge base on this important topic. Share relevant blog entries with your class on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Challenge cooperative learning groups to read one of the blogs and share the information with the class by creating online posters on paper using a tool such as Web Poster Wizard (<a href="/single.cfm?id=7332">reviewed here</a>) or PicLits (<a href="/single.cfm?id=8177">reviewed here</a>).

Mathway

6-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices https://www.mathway.com/Algebra Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:49 share

How It Works

Enter algebra problems and receive the solutions! Also included are many sample problems. Choose sample problems using the options on the right of the screen, from categories such as algebra concepts and expressions, simplifying or factoring polynomials, vectors, and much more. After creating a problem, select "solve" to find an answer. One major downfall of the site is that the option to see the steps needed to answer the problem leads to a pay site. However, the site is still worthwhile for students to check problem solutions.

In the Classroom

Share the site with students as a resource for checking homework. Provide this link on your class website. At the beginning of a unit, display the site on your interactive whiteboard or projector showing the solution to a new problem, and then allow students to investigate and discover how to find the answer. When they complain that the site does not explain how it "got" the answer, you have the perfect teaching moment to point out why you require students to "show their work" to remove such mystery.

Defenders of Wildlife

— Defenders of Wildlife

6-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://www.defenders.org/index_v2.html Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:49 share

How It Works

Defenders of Wildlife is chalk full of useful, current information about wildlife conservation, threats to the natural environment, and fact sheets about specific species of animals, as well as much more! Explaining concepts such as climate change, off-shore drilling and renewable energy this site is an invaluable environmental resource. Plus, all information comes with interesting photos and an easy to navigate menu of further information.

In the Classroom

This would be an excellent resource for an environmental science class. Add to online course sites as an alternative to textbooks. Create assignments where students are directed to this site to read for understanding of the topics that are being discussed. For students in more advanced environmental studies, the section on Policy and Legislation is great. It is far more understandable than reading through the actual laws and policies. Have students read the website information on a specific policy or law, and then have the students find the actual law to "check up" on the site. This will encourage students to make comparisons between the reading that they could easily understand and the more complicated language of the actual laws. This simple exercise could be incorporated in an English or reading comprehension classroom or a science classroom (what a great way to do a little cross curricular teaching!). Students will learn to read more analytically in the process!

Vocabulary.com

— Vocabulary.com

6-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://www.vocabulary.com/ Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:49 share

How It Works

Vocabulary.com is an individualized vocabulary development program. Your students will select definitions for several vocabulary words. Based on their answers, the program will predict which vocabulary words they don’t know and instruct them from there. You can also type in a word to learn the definition. With more than 40,000 questions to help your students learn new vocabulary, time will not be wasted here. The vocabulary is chosen based on words that need to be mastered for success in an academic or business environment. The program will analyze student achievement and review words that the students originally missed to make sure they are retaining the words. Vocabulary.com is for students from elementary school through graduate school. You can register with an email address or via your Facebook account. Note: as with any dictionary tool, there is content that is intended for more mature users, including matter of fact definitions of swear words. Teachers will want to manage this tool as any adult dictionary and have logical consequences for those who look up words so they can giggle, etc.

In the Classroom

Use this site as a learning center or station for students who finish their work early. Be sure to mark the site on classroom computers, making it easier for students to navigate there. Or, if you have access to multiple classroom computers, you may want to start your language arts lessons with five to ten minutes of work on Vocabulary.com. Once students have learned this program they can be totally independent. This is one to list on your class website for students/parents to access at home for additional practice.

Biographies of Women Mathematicians

How It Works

These pages are part of an on-going project at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, Georgia, to illustrate the numerous achievements of women in the field of mathematics. The site includes biographical essays or comments on the women mathematicians profiled, as well as additional resources about women in mathematics. Each time the home page is reloaded, a randomly selected photo is displayed. Click on the image to go to the profile of that woman. The site is also searchable by alphabetical order, chronological order, names by location of birth, the first PhD’s in Mathematics of Women before 1930, and prizes, honors and awards for women mathematicians.

In the Classroom

Share this site with students as a resource when writing biographies of famous mathematicians (or women’s history.) Share one woman mathematician on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) each day as students arrive in class. Use this site in history class to locate and research famous mathematicians alive during the time period being studied.
