How It Works

Have fun exploring Pi with this math site! Play Pi Trivia to test your knowledge of Pi, use the Pi Trainer to test your memory, or discover poems, photos and more all representing Pi. The site is divided into three sections - fun activities, aesthetics, and nerd stuff- making it easy to explore.

In the Classroom

Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector, then allow students to explore on their own. Use the poems, photos, and other aesthetics as examples, then have students create their own Pi aesthetics to share on your classroom website or blog. Have a class competition to see who can memorize the most digits in Pi after training with the Pi memory trainer.

Although a portion of the site contains links to shopping for Pi-related items, there are many valuable resources within the site to use in the classroom. Beginners can learn about Pi through the short explanation at the Learn About Pi link. While at this page, be sure to look on the upper-right-hand side for the link of classroom ideas - this link contains many ideas sent in by classroom teachers. Created by the NSF International, there are downloadable games, webisodes, and even a story about hand sanitizer. Try interactives that teach about how to keep bacteria and other germs at bay.

In the Classroom

Use this website to help teach younger students about health and personal hygiene. Share a webisode on the interactive whiteboard or projector to introduce the concept of hygiene, then have students work in learning centers with one of the interactives on the interactive whiteboard or projector as a station for learning. The interactives are not just about game play, but rather provide the participants with information and facts as they progress through the steps.

How It Works

Understand basic math and algebra, as well as advanced math topics like calculus and statistics. These free CliffsNotes articles can help when you’re doing math homework and taking math tests. Articles begin with Algebra 1 and basic math skills and continue through Statistics and Trigonometry. Each article gives a written overview of the topic along with diagrams and charts. Each also contains a link on how to cite the article. Resources also include glossaries for Pre-Agebra, Geometry, and Statistics. Although the site is set up as a supplement to the familiar Cliff Notes books available as study guides, these materials are free and useful as resources in the math classroom. This site does include some unobtrusive advertisements.

In the Classroom

Share this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector as a supplement to resources used in the classroom for learning basic math skills. Use this site in English class as a lesson for citing internet articles. Share the site on your classroom website or blog for students to use as a resource when working at home. Have student groups make an online Stixy (<a href="/single.cfm?id=9631">reviewed here</a>) of things they discover about math concepts and later rearrange the items to “explain” their topic to classmates visually.

How It Works

This word cloud generator is made specifically for children. This site takes any text and creates a "word cloud" (graphical display) of the words in a passage of text. The most frequent words appear larger. Paste in any passage or grouping of text to create a word cloud of the text. Students can choose their own colors, type of display, font, and the final cloud can be printed or saved.

In the Classroom

This is a great visual tool to use. Take a poll and have your students type their answers into the word cloud builder. Then display on an interactive whiteboard or projector and see which answer was the most popular. Use this site as a way to help students see and memorize text, especially visual learners. Use it also when writing poetry or to "see" themes of repeated words and images. Have students paste in their own writing to spot repeated (and monotonous) language when teaching lessons on word choice. Students will be surprised to see what words appear to be dominant. Have students work in groups to create word posters of vocabulary words with related meanings, such as different ways to say "walk" or "said" and decorate your classroom with these visual reminders of the richness of language.

Aesthetic Computing for Mathematics Teachers

How It Works

"Aesthetic computing" is an approach to algebra that focuses on students representing algebraic equations as pictures and stories to increase student involvement and understanding. The goal is to engage students who would benefit through hands-on and visual approaches to learning. The site includes a 5 minute video describing the approach, an introduction to the theory including lesson plans and handouts, and learning outcomes. Lesson plans are divided into Middle School and High School categories. One interesting inclusion to the site is the online chat and group for teachers interested in trying the approach. The group is very small but might be worthwhile to use for networking with others using this approach.

In the Classroom

Share this site with Special Education and Gifted teachers as the hands-on approach will appeal to both types of learners. Display and share students’ pictures and stories in your classroom or on your classroom website. Challenge students to find the equation within the pictures and stories.

This site offers practice in secondary mathematics topics using fun activities such as games, and Math With the Movies, and a cool activity called "MathCaching." "MathCaching" uses the internet to find hidden boxes to reveal clues to the games. Your success at "MathCaching" is dependent upon your skills at solving mathematical problems. Answers to caching activities can only be retrieved through email - teachers must email the site administrator from an educational email address, parents need to register on the site then email the administrators. Explanations for all activities are available onsite. Junior Math Resources has a section with free samples for teacher use. The printables and multimedia materials covers sixth grade math through Pre Algebra with the intent of to energize students’ mathematical experiences. And, there is much more to explore!

How It Works

How are rainbows formed? Why do they only occur when the sun is behind the observer? If the sun is low on the horizon, at what angle in the sky should we expect to see a rainbow? This lab helps to answer these and other questions by examining a mathematical model of light passing through a water droplet. Follow each step of the lab - how light travels, reflection, refraction, exploration, and analysis - to solve the questions. Each segment offers some information about the topic and questions to explore or experiments. The focus of each of the activities is the Mathematical equations and principals involved in creating rainbows.
