LFI Spring 2011 Symposium: U.S. and China: What Does the Future Hold?

How It Works

Today’s students and citizens need to know about China. The spring, 2011 installment of the semi-annual Lou Frey Institute Symposia features topics related to China, the U.S., and issues such as cultural understanding, security, working together, and (keynote) "Reasons and Prospects for a Chinese-American Partnership." The sessions were streamed as live video over the web on April 4, 2011, from the University of Central Florida, but can also be viewed in these archived videos. Speakers include "members of the diplomatic corps, policy experts and noted commentators." See officials from the two governments in action as they address hot topics of 2011 and the future for today’s students.

In the Classroom

Combine selections from these sessions with <a href="/spectopics/chinaandcross-cultural.cfm">TeachersFirst’s China and Cross-Cultural Resources</a> and our editor’s <a href="http://blog.teachersfirst.com/thinkteach/category/china/">blog posts</a> from a recent China visit to help students explore the issues and subtleties of U.S.-Chinese relations and globalization. Focus on cross-cultural understanding in a Chinese language or world cultures class or on policy issues in U.S. government. The rules are simple: No Money, No Car, and No Adults permitted for putting your plans into action.rn<br><br>rnThere are suggestions, resources, and support to empower young people and give them the energy to take action and make a difference. In the Classroom

Do you believe that kids can change the world? What are you doing about that? If you have been thinking about involving your class in some type of community service and project based learning, but need some direction, DoSomething.org is a phenomenal place to "shop" around for ideas. Perhaps you may want to start by showing the film, <i>Pay It Forward</i>, or with a writing prompt, "If you were given time in school to come up with one idea that could be put into action right now by people your age that would make this school or this community a better place, what would it be and how would you put your plan into action?" Have students share ideas in small groups, then introduce them to DoSomething.org by projecting it on your classroom whiteboard or projector, viewing some of the short videos, and using the power of the internet to empower them to act now. Challenge students to collect Internet resources for their cause using Wakelet, <a href="/single.cfm?id=17619">reviewed here</a>, rn where they can add a cover image, background, and chose the layout they prefer. Next, enhance learning by asking your students to create an interactive infographic using Canva Infographic Maker, <a href="/single.cfm?id=17570">reviewed here</a>, to explain their ideas about their cause and how they would put their plan into action. Club advisers, school counselors, and teachers of gifted can use the empowering resources of this site to inspire students to ACT.

How It Works

This attractive library of Shakespeare’s literary works is organized just the way you want it: each poem, comedy, history, and tragedy is bound in its own volume and placed in alphabetical order on the appropriate shelf of the bookcase. The titles link to the 1914 edition of <i>The Oxford Shakespeare</i> at Bartleby and <i>The Complete Works of William Shakespeare</i> from Jeremy Hylton at MIT. This is truly a librarian’s, English teacher’s, or any lover of literature’s delight! You can find the actual text of any Shakespeare work.

In the Classroom

Students and teachers will enjoy using this Shakespeare offering because it is just "As You Like It"! Include this site on your classroom web page to provide students, parents, and yourself ease of access to reputable on-line versions of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and all the other literary works. This website will come in handy for projecting text on your classroom whiteboard to highlight, compare, and interpret particular scenes and lines. Math lovers have been known to celebrate the Joys of Pi, and this website offers many opportunities for celebration! The site is based on David Blatner’s book of the same name; however, it contains many links and resources for learning about Pi. The most in-depth portion is the links section which contains a long list of Pi links around the web such as Pi History, Pi Mysteries, and Fun with Pi. Who knows, you may want to follow the link to purchase a Pi tie!rn<br><br>rn<b>Caution: there is a link to American Pi which is a spoof on the movie, American Pie, and may contain some adult themes.</b>

In the Classroom

Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. A good activity for this introduction is to complete the matchstick activity as a class (you could have students or small groups of students draw their answer on an index card to show you). Then have students explore this site independently or in small groups. Enhance student learning by asking teams to report back on interesting Pi facts or information found using a video explanation tool like FlipGrid, <a href="/single.cfm?id=17677">reviewed here</a>. FlipGrid provides a tool for video responses to a question along with comments from peers. Include The Joy of Pi site with your Pi Day celebrations!

In the Classroom

Just try to take the dictionaries away from your students when you project a <i>Vocab-u-lous </i> activity sheet on your whiteboard (or projector) or hand them the printable version of the worksheet. These are useful for SAT preparation and other tests that assess vocabulary, as well as building a strong vocabulary necessary for better reading comprehension and oral and written communication. When using this activity with a class set of computers, provide a link from your class web page to a reputable online dictionary. For additional practice, provide this link on your class website for students to access at home.

How It Works

Learn about various animal behaviors and use the simulations to view frequencies and causes of behavior. Click on one of the "Instructional Modules" along the right such as "Lizard pushups" or "Bumblebee decisions." Follow the pages that describe behaviors of that species as well as background information.

In the Classroom

Use the simulation to learn more about behaviors, complete data sheets, and answer questions about behavior, territory, and other factors. Research behaviors in other animals and share with the rest of the class. Relate behavior as one of the characteristics that all living things share. Create a wall or web page of behaviors students learn throughout the year. In the Classroom

As part of a unit on microscopy, show a variety of organisms that can be found in pond water. Use this resource to identify organisms that have been collected locally. If you have access to a microscope with a digital camera, take pictures of the critters and post on a wiki, blog, or site with descriptions, sizes, and other information. Use images collected or have students draw pictures to create food chains around the room using the organisms.

How It Works

This website can generate random, thought provoking math facts. Or, it can be searched by type of math and level of fact difficulty. While most math content is high school level, some of the easier problems may be used with seventh and eighth grades. The search option appears to save time if you are looking for a specific variety of math such as calculus. Although this site is rather "plain vanilla" and does include some unobtrusive ads, it is definitely worth adding to your math collection!

In the Classroom

Use this type of fact as a class warm-up exercise or bell ringer activity to have students get actively engaged in learning from the moment they enter your classroom. Or, use it as a Fun Friday Math Fact activity. Assign students into small groups or partners to "solve" a math fact. Additionally, many of these facts could be turned into mini-math research project. Have students investigate this site independently and share their findings with the class by creating an interactive online poster using Genial.ly, <a href="/single.cfm?id=17621">reviewed here</a>.
