How It Works

Constructed by a practicing teacher, this webquest is simple, but very good. It takes students through a series of searches that lets them think about the difference between society and theatre of that time. While Mr. Eyerly has constructed the quest in such a way as to take the place of or significantly augment a unit plan (covering 45 days) on Elizabethan drama, with the culminating project being a student film, many parts of this are adaptable to shorter periods and less ambitious outcomes.

In the Classroom

There are many ways you can use this webquest to assist in teaching the beginning of modern drama, Elizabethan theatre, or Shakespeare. He goes through the quest process of introduction, task, process, and evaluation, but he also includes a teacher page with tips and ideas that is useful to the classroom teacher. If you have never done a complete webquest, why not consider trying ONE per year to see the benefits of a project-based approach, especially if someone else has already created the project for you. A grading rubric is includede in the Student Pages.rn<br><br>rnTo assist in script editing and peer review, consider having students write and turn in their scripts on Google Docs, <a href="/single.cfm?id=8030">reviewed here</a>. This can allow you an easier opportunity at giving timely feedback, and make it easier for groups to work in separate locations if need be - great for those with busy schedules.

Safe Teens

6-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://www.safeteens.com/ Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:49 share

How It Works

This site is the teen partner to safekids.com. Its additional offerings include a wonderful cyber-dictionary parents can use when they are totally puzzled by acronyms their children are using in email, chat rooms, and text messaging (Note: the language is realistically what some teens use---asterisks replace "bad" words, but the abbreviations could teach the timid more than they want to know). Highlights for teens include tips about safe blogging, warnings about grooming, general Internet safety info, and accompanying info for parents. A link to blogsafety.com allows users to report abuses and suspicious behavior that might occur on blogging or social network sites. Links to current articles about Internet misuse keep the site current.

In the Classroom

Use this site as the starting point when teens have questions about blogging, cyber safety, and correct Internet behavior so they know what to watch for should something unethical occur. Be sure to share it with parents via your teacher web page or at open house, as well. As you begin web-based activities in class, take the time to repeat the basics found here, even if another teacher is supposed to "cover" this topic.

How It Works

This website provides excellent descriptions for numerous biology concepts. Utilize the resource to simplify the complexities of biology. The site is designed for high school students and advanced biology classes, but some of the activities would be useful with the middle grades, also. The website features animation, interactive challenges, lessons, explicit details about the biology concepts, and other educational activities. Some of the topics include cells, respiration, nutrition, digestion, reproduction, genetics, DNA and many other science/biology topics. Some standards can be found at the "Teachers Lounge" link.

In the Classroom

The interactives would help many students visualize concepts. Use the site as an introduction to or organizer for basic concepts in class, then include the link on your web page for students to review before a test. Some of the activities are also suited for an interactive whiteboard. This site follows a British AS and A2 level and may not exactly follow your curriculum sequence. Some portions require high school level reading, so learning support students would need assistance in select portions.

6-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices https://www.s-cool.co.uk/a-level/physics Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:49 share

How It Works

This website provides review ("revision" in the UK) for numerous physics concepts taught in secondary sciecne. Utilize the resource to simplify the complexities of physics. There are nine different guides/mini-units on various physics topics. Some of the specific topics include energy transfers, properties of waves, radioactivity and more. The website features animation, interactive challenges, lessons, explicit details about the physics concepts and other educational activities. An FYI for U.S. teachers: GCSE stands for General Certificate of Secondary Education (UK). The interactive activities require Flash, get it from the <a href="/tools.cfm ">TeachersFirst Toolbox page.</a>.

In the Classroom

Many of these activities could be overview-introductions on an interactive whiteboard or projector. You will definitely want to share this resources on your teacher web page for students to use as test revew for your class. Be sure to tell them which modules to use to fit your content! More able and curious science students who wish to "self-teach" on their own will appreciate the modules as tutorials. Teachers of gifted should share them with their science enthusiasts from grade 5 and up.

How It Works

This is a time-saving online tool for any subject. Reinforce concepts and spelling with your own customized word searches. This tool allows for a variety of options for the placement of the words or even the shape of the grid puzzle. Teachers can personalize the font styles and sizes as well. rnrn

In the Classroom

Read the home page carefully for directions on setting your browser for a more customized look. Landscape mode works best for most puzzles. Make sure you take their suggestion of copying your word list onto your clipboard just in case you lose the word search. For younger students, consider sharing a word search on an interactive whiteboard and letting them "highlight" the words with a finger in different colors.

Andy’s Los Alamos Blog

— TeachersFirst

6-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://lanlandy.edublogs.org/2007/05/ Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:48 share

How It Works

TeachersFirst is proud to offer this chance to experience the life of a physics researcher through the eyes and dry humor of our own physics blogger, Andy. As an undergraduate not long out of the high school physics lab, Andy brings us into the "real world" of scientific research but can still connect with the middle or high school student who may be wondering, "When am I ever gunna use this stuff?" Spending the summer of 2007 at Los Alamos National Labs, Andy shares his day-to-day discoveries and gives your students a chance to respond to the blog, perhaps connecting to a "real" scientist for the first time. Use the calendar on the left menu and start reading in the month of May.

In the Classroom

Share this resource with your science students or gifted classes on your teacher web page and encourage them to follow it throughout the summer. Andy promises to keep all of us up to date and, within time constraints, respond to meaningful comments. Have students blog about their lab experiments or experiences outside of school. Use a blogging tool like Telegra.ph, <a href="/single.cfm?id=17846">reviewed here</a>. This blog creator requires no registration.

How It Works

This site takes readers on a detailed, fourteen-day adventure down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. The trip includes breath-taking photos and a few videos of the river, canyon walls, plant life and local animals. The site maintains a wealth of knowledge on geologic history. Be prepared for some lengthy reading.

In the Classroom

As they read the descriptions of the tour, students will find first-hand accounts of some of the research being done on the Colorado River. Since most teachers cannot take an actual trip to the Grand Canyon, use this site on laptops or a projector for a virtual trip. Ask questions requiring students to find examples of various types of rock or evidence of the geologic history of the canyon. A simple set of "why?" questions about various images will challenge students to apply what they know about rock, sediment, erosion, and more.

Click for detailed information about each element Students can find States,Energies, Oxidation & Electrons,Appearance & Characteristics, Reactions, Other Forms, Radius, Conductivity, and Abundance. In addition to specific information about each element, there is a brief history of the periodic table. A forum section allows users to post questions and discussion related to chemistry. As with most forums, there are rules and a moderator, but no one can assure that all comments will be "on task." Links to a chemistry dictionary and also other chemistry tools complete the offering of the website.
