How It Works

This is a privately maintained website dedicated to the warfare of the Spartans, with a specific focus on the Battle of Thermopylae. Clicking battle-related topics on the grid of possibilities opens longer menus with subtopics. The site has extensive text passages and includes ads. There are good photos of the battlefield today, pictures and descriptions of the combatants, and information about the battle. Site creators have notified TeachersFirst to tell us that they are expanding materials on the Battle of Marathon in time for its 2500th anniversary. Teachers of literature, teaching about Greek mythology may also want to tie in this site as part of a look at Greek culture. The movie "300" may generate some interest in this famous battle and having the facts is useful in bridging students’ interest in Hollywood’s depiction of the event with the historical truth.

Include this site as one of the resources you offer from your teacher website for students doing individual or group projects on Sparta, the Greeks, or mythology. The site offers some useful research information and some good visuals. rn

Help students develop personal financial literacy as a real-world connection to your curriculum. At this site, teens take a quiz to find out their background, financial needs, and monthly expenditures. The next page shows users how much money they need to earn to fulfill just their basic needs. The calculator breaks the amount needed to earnings per hour times how many hours per week they’d need to work. It also displays a breakdown of what types of employment would yield the desired amount. Of course, the site also shows that the more educated one is, the better the wages.

In the Classroom

Have students navigate the quiz and scenarios on laptops or in a lab-- or even as homework-- as part of you unit on life after high school or career planning. There is more teacher information and an explanation of standards available in the drop-down menus.

Here is the official website of a popular young adult author. S. E. Hinton burst on the literary scene with the book "The Outsiders," written when she was only 17. Her youth has always appealed to young readers, as well as her young subject matter. This is a typical official website that includes biographical information with information on her books and movies adaptations. The book pages include comments from the author and short excerpts and summaries of the works.

In the Classroom

A good source of material about the author. This site will also steer kids to her other works. The FAQ will probably mirror questions many of your students have about her stories and where she gets her ideas, etc.

This is an amazing site for kids who ask, "But what did they WEAR?" In today’s fashion-conscious society, looking at the past is often quite amusing, eye-opening, and insightful. A worthwhile site for teachers of theater, history, English, and even family and consumer science -- since the site even includes some patterns. Clicking on any of the options in the opening menu will take you to specific areas of that subject through history. The "Costume History sorted by Period" is truly fascinating as it offers drawings, patterns, and rationale for clothing of different time periods, including materials used and practical reasons for everything from codpieces to headdresses.

In the Classroom

This is a HUGE site worth dipping into for everything from history of clothing to wedding rituals and ceremonies of all kinds. As you introduce the setting of a new piece of literature or study of a new historical period, share this site to make another time "real" to your fashion-conscious teens. Include this site for fashion, costuming, or customs as one of the student research topics for a time period or lit study. <br> <br>rnNote: The site is not terribly attractive as a set of links. It also has advertising and links to "outside" topics. Give precise directions for where students should go.

This site offers FREE interactive math tools: qualitative grapher, piecewise linear grapher, linear transformer, function analyzer, quadratic transformer, system solver, plopit, and proportioner. Originally the interactives required special software, but they now run directly from the web site without any special installation or download. The interactives all include a real-time connection between math concepts (graphical or symbolic) and the representations. The activities provide visual illustrations to enhance algebra class. They allow for accelerated learning. And you are even able to save images to share with classmates.rn<br><br>rnThe "Qualitative Grapher" demonstrates the meaning of a function and see how it can be seen as something changing over time. The "Proportioner" highlights scale and proportion and allows you to compare image dimensions. All of the other individual activities highlight other upper level math skills. This site has an A-Z listing of all the games played on the popular TV show Whose Line Is It Anyway? as played in the original show in Great Britain and the American version hosted by Drew Carey. For the simplest games, there is just a description. For the ones that need further explanation, there are links to click on and a sample shows as the game was played with the actual script as it happened.

In the Classroom

This can be a great lesson starter, particularly on those dreary days when kids don’t want to work. For lower level kids, it is a brain exercise for such things as the alphabet game (which is more difficult than it first seems!). For higher level kids, you can substitute characters from literature with a situation from the story itself or from history with imaginative "what if" dialogue for actual events.

CRAYON: Create Your Own Newspaper

How It Works

By registering with an email address, you and your students are able to create their own newspaper with a choice of three options, a simple page layout, one with frames, or one with two windows which requires Java Script. Creators can also add images and/or links to images and other info. After selecting either "standard" (displays newspaper sections one at a time) or "quick paper" (shows all sections and selects the most popular items for the final paper), students can click to read their personalized news. Options allow students to hear the news also, using RealAudio. They can select news from local, national, or international papers. Instructions on the site are excellent and preparing the personalized newspaper just takes a few moments. Participants receive a link to their newspapers in an email message sent only to them. remember that the audio requires Real Player. In the Classroom

A great way to get students involved with the news on an intimate basis!! Teachers can also create a classroom newspaper for parents and others to access. Check on your district policy regarding posting student work to the web. It would be a good idea to limit names to initials and to get written parent permission before setting up accounts. Then use YOUR teacher email account for safety reasons.

This site is affiliated with the PBS NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, and presents a lesson plan focused on Supreme Court nominations and the ongoing balance of power in the US government. There are excellent discussion guides, a link to streaming video from the NewsHour, with an accompanying transcript that can be distributed, and a PDF version of a Chicago Tribune article on the issue. There is a nice vocabulary list. There is a good handout on the process of nominating a Supreme Court judge and a worksheet that accompanies it.

In the Classroom

There is a really nice "balance of powers" exercise that goes way beyond a simple discussion of the Supreme Court. Students look at all three branches of government and determine which branch has power in a variety of contemporary situations. This lesson plan is good as a stand-alone, but also provides a lot of jumping off places for further discussion and adaptation. Use a projector, as the plan suggests, to share the short video clips, available in several formats.
