Selections include a world map, maps of continents, countries, states, and even county maps for each state. In the Classroom

Bookmark and share this site for any number of uses. Print a labeled world map for each student to include in their social studies notebook to reference throughout the year. Find and print maps that correlate to novels and stories being read in class and ask students to label the character’s journey on the map. Use maps during science lessons to label locations and environmental features found throughout the globe. Use a map as an image and upload to ThingLink, reviewed here, then add web links, video links, and other information to add annotation to the map. Create infographics using information learned during your map studies with Canva Infographic Creator, reviewed here, that share information about different locations around the world such as population, income, and economic statistics.

The U.S. Map Distorted by Population offers a visual look at the size of states based solely on population. Follow the link in the short article to find the actual populations of each state. This simple image provides a good introduction to population vs geographic size of states.

In the Classroom

This site is perfect for use on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Before sharing, have students create a list of what they think are the smallest and biggest states, then compare using the image map. Ask students to list what they think may be the most populated states and compare with this map. Use this image as a starting point for group projects. Challenge students to create similar maps based on average income, farm output, manufacturing, or other statistics. Have students use one of the many mapping tools available from the TeachersFirst Edge. Have students compare geographic state size to population size and discuss reasons for differences. For enrichment, have students find populations from 100 years ago and recreate this map using those statistics.

How It Works

MapFight is a clever tool for comparing the physical area of different countries and states. Use the dropdown boxes to select from countries and states available and then click compare. View an image with the two locations overlaid on each other with a short sentence comparing the sizes in kilometers. If you click on the name of the state or country you will be taken to a Wikipedia entry about the location.

In the Classroom

MapFight is perfect for use on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Use to demonstrate size differences in states and countries. Have students use this site when presenting state reports. Find a similar sized state (or country), then use the map as part of the presentation. Have a new student from another state or country? Use MapFight to begin discussion of comparative size of where they came from to where your classroom is located. Use this to give students a perspective on geographic size of earth features that they can’t see by looking at a standard map. Use to discuss and informally assess prior knowledge as you start your study of states. This tool would be especially important when explaining the concept of map scale or square miles/meters. Use MapFight to compare locations students read about in Globetracker’s Mission or books they are reading. Include it in discussions about the impact of a country’s size on its culture in world language or cultures classes. Have students create a simple infographic sharing their findings using Venngage reviewed here. Use an online tool such as Interactive Two Circle Venn Diagram (reviewed here) to compare any two locations.

How It Works

Seterra Online is a challenging educational geography activity with more than 100 different exercises. Learn about countries, capitals, oceans, flags and cities in Africa, Europe, South America, North America, Asia and Australia using outline map exercises! Explore the 50 states of the USA and even the capitals. Choose from quizzes sorted by continent or the entire world. Once the map loads, follow the prompts to click on the correct area of the map. After a few incorrect tries, the right area will flash in red. Correct responses on the first try appear in white, yellow indicates a right answer on the second attempt, and the red areas indicate incorrect responses. When complete, view the percentage correct and time it took to finish the activity.

In the Classroom

Share this link on your class projector or interactive whiteboard. This is a perfect addition if your students are learning the 50 states, capitals, or even countries throughout the world. Be sure to include this site on your class web page for students to access both in and outside of class for further practice. Share this tool as an excellent study guide for learning locations around the world. Challenge students to increase time and accuracy in completing these map activities.

Create Your Visited States Map

How It Works

Where have you been? Create a color-coded map of the United States or Canada that highlights states that you have visited. Go through the list of states and choose a color for each state. There are four colors to choose from indicating your amount of time spent in that state. Just click on the state and then find your color. Or use the list of states found under the map. Choose an image width and pick the "Create" button to make your personalized image map. Save the map to your computer in png format. Please note: this is part of an individual’s travel blog, and posts are not moderated for school use. Be sure to check out content links before sharing or student use. Or better yet, advise students NOT to click on any external links.

In the Classroom

Creating this would make an interesting map to create as a class project when learning about the 50 states. Go through the states list on your interactive whiteboard and create your class map to print or share as a digital image on your class website. Do a map as a class to see which states MOST students have visited. If you feel students may be embarrassed at their lack of travel, this may be better done on individual computers or on a personal response form given to you to input privately. For a whole class activity, divide your class into groups to create separate maps. Compare and contrast states visited. Send home a link to the website for students to create a map with their families. For older students, use the map for content and reassign colors as needed. For example, create a map showing the birthplace of U.S. Presidents: assign red to states without a president, yellow with one president, and green with two or more. This same format could be used in nearly any subject while studying differences in states (democrat or republican, most popular agriculture product, how many - if any - NFL teams, teen pregnancy rate, and much more).

How It Works

This site contains several interactive geography activities. Interactives are broken down into the categories of Capitals, States, and Landscapes. Each of those categories has several levels that are guaranteed to challenge all learners.

In the Classroom

This site can be used in many ways. Use the tutorials on an interactive whiteboard or projector with the whole group to introduce the site. When using as a whole group, provide students with a map so everyone can participate in the activity. The site can then be used as a center, for individual work in a computer lab or can be assigned as a challenge activity for advanced learners. If your students are learning the regions of the United States, state capitals, state locations, or landforms, be sure to list this link on your class website for students to access both in and out of the classroom. There are some ads but they are not overwhelming.
