How It Works

Science in the Classroom offers free annotated research articles and teaching materials. Choose any item to read each article in full. Dig a little deeper by selecting a Learning Lens, found at the bottom of any article under Teaching Resources, to focus on specific information within the article such as conclusions or connections to standards highlighted by different colors. Also, this site offers Thought Questions for each article allowing readers to extend thinking beyond the information provided. Some selections include videos. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

Science in the Classroom is a must-add to any high school classroom. View articles together on your interactive whiteboard as you add highlighted annotations to focus on the content. Alternatively, print a copy of the article and have students add highlights to compare to the site’s highlighted portions. Be sure to help weaker readers and ESL/ELL students by sharing the vocabulary words before reading, either on a handout or by projecting on an interactive whiteboard or screen and highlighting them in the text as you come to them. Flip learning by having students read an article before coming to class, ask them to prepare questions they have for when they return to class. Have students create a simple infographic sharing their findings using Venngage, <a href="/single.cfm?id=13706">reviewed here</a>. Use an online flashcard maker, like Flashcard Stash, <a href="/single.cfm?id=12465">reviewed here</a>, to review important vocabulary or content from any article.

How It Works

Diversity Workshop is a training guide for facilitating discussions on diversity and the role of identity in social relationships. Training focuses on two key areas - the concept of culture and identity. Different activities offer participants the opportunity to learn about and practice ideas within each concept.

In the Classroom

Take advantage of the activities shared within the guide to use as part of community building in your classroom or to teach diversity and encourage self identity. Have students create a word cloud of the important terms they learn from this site using a tool such as WordItOut, <a href="/single.cfm?id=10707">reviewed here</a>. Before and after activities have students or groups collect ideas and thoughts about diversity using Dotstorming, <a href="/single.cfm?id=16997">reviewed here</a>. The Dotstorming application creates free online bulletin boards. Embed Dotstorming on your class website for students to access at home.

How It Works

This free interactive site is an extensive digital literacy curriculum that improves technology proficiency, builds information literacy and digital citizenship skill, and provides 21st century and project-based resources online. The 21 Things are ’big ideas’ in technology and learning such as Visual Learning, Collaboration, Cloud Initiation, Digital Footprint, and much more. The student activities use free web resources designed to address the ISTE National Educational Technology Standards for Students, and the Partnership for 21st Century Skills. The non-sequential Things, delivered as project-based Quests, provide links, resources, and activities for students to earn badges and awards. Registration for teachers is required and gives access to teacher resources and a downloadable Moodle version of the site; Moodle is not required to use this site. To access certain external activities and tools, students may need to register with an e-mail. Each Thing contains a Teacher Lesson Guide, Student Checklist, Learning Objectives, and links to various web resources and apps. Things and Quests have roadmap documents for students to use for tracking progress. A Quest includes an introduction (frequently as a short animated video), vocabulary, directions, tutorials, standards, apps, and a student checklist. Extensive teacher resources and support are provided. Assessments are through multiple-choice quizzes at ProProf with a provided password.

In the Classroom

Use the complete curriculum or selected Quests. Assign students individual Things to complete in school or at home as part of blended learning or flipped classrooms. Have students begin with the Basics and progress through selected skills. Use parts of the site to teach a particular skill to the whole class. Have students complete their work through an electronic portfolio Pathbrite, <a href="/single.cfm?id=14067">reviewed here</a>, but not included on the site. There are links to some ideas and samples on the Student Showcase page. Extensive teacher resources and support provided.

Take advantage of the many free educational materials for use in your science classroom. Use materials from this site as an anticipatory set or "activator" to introduce a unit or lesson on a projector or interactive whiteboard. Organized as one lengthy page of useful tips, information includes choosing an online accredited college or university program that best suits a student’s needs, financial aid advice, and links to other helpful sites. Specific school searches may be done elsewhere on the sponsoring site once you register. Other areas of the larger website include advice for the hearing and visual impaired.

In the Classroom

Guidance counselors and teachers, particularly intervention specialists, will find this a helpful place to share with students and their parents although information is very basic. The larger sponsoring site includes higher education selection advice for all students. Use this resource with individual students or in group settings, perhaps at a college and career night, or as part of a newsletter or other resource geared to high school students and their parents.

How It Works

Designed as an interactive online course this site helps high school students develop the sophisticated research skills needed for college and careers, an important component of most standards. The formal research process is broken down into six steps: Ask Good Questions, Finding Information, Selecting the Best, Putting It Together, Your Presentation, and Making the Grade. Students work through a variety of activities linked from outside sites, including reading articles, watching videos, and completing worksheets. Each module is introduced by Voki avatars, <a href="/single.cfm?id=10113">reviewed here</a>. In the Classroom

R4S would be perfect for use as a blended-learning or the flipped classroom experience for upper high school into the first year of college. You can have students work online, or you can download into your course management system. Have students work through all the steps as part of a research assignment, or use only the parts relevant to them. Teachers need to register to receive the text copy of the helpful teacher’s guide. Use the site in any subject or curriculum area.
