The Global Flow of Refugees Interactive

How It Works

The Global Flow of Refugees offers an interactive look at refugee flows between countries during the past few years. It is based on raw data collected by the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR. Be sure to read the "Before You Begin" section for using the map. Click any segment to narrow down information to individual countries showing the flow to or from that country. In addition to the interactive map, scroll down further on the page to view two static versions of the map and informational charts.

In the Classroom

Share this site on a projector or interactive whiteboard to research and understand the flow of refugees throughout the world. Use this as an introduction to understanding complicated events in the Middle East and other volatile regions in the world. After viewing the interactive, have students study the regions for large migrations of refugees from one region to another. Have them share their findings with a multimedia presentation using one of the many TeachersFirst Edge tools <a href="/content/edge.cfm?c=18">reviewed here</a>. Have students use Little Memory, <a href="/single.cfm?id=14197">reviewed here</a>, to create a diary entry as a refugee traveling to a new country.

How It Works

Investigate migration patterns around the world from 1990 through 2010 with this interactive chart. Choose a five-year period for an overall view of global migration during that time. Click on individual regions to narrow down information on migration from country to country. Be sure to click on both individual lines and countries to take advantage of all the information this resource has to offer. Information for 2005-2010 is available for download as a two-sided poster using the link near the bottom of the website.

In the Classroom

Share these videos on an interactive whiteboard or projector. FLIP your classroom and have students view the videos at home to discuss and apply the next day in class (this is an excellent option if your school blocks YouTube). Use the videos to introduce or practice any math topic and assign others from the series for homework. Be sure to provide this link on your class website for students (and their families) to access at home for additional math practice.

However, the many articles and rich images on this site explain and illustrate the issues well.

In the Classroom

With reading levels from middle to high school, the many posts and articles on this site would be excellent background information for students exploring environmental issues around the world, in this case in Africa. Some of the sections are more image-heavy and could even be accessible with an upper elementary class on a projector or interactive whiteboard. Challenge students (or small groups) to delve into an issue of their choice and explain what has caused the problem and how people are trying to solve it. Their explanation could be a traditional oral presentation, an infographic created with Easelly, <a href="/single.cfm?id=13619">reviewed here</a>, or a creative video using a tool from the <a href="/content/edge.cfm?c=21">TeachersFirst Edge</a>. Offer this site as an optional extension for your more able students who are passionate about animals and/or the environment. Share it around Earth Day as an option for students to create posters or even raise funds for an environmental cause.

Flip your classroom and use a video as homework. Have students take notes about the material and write down questions they still have and topics that confuse them. That activity can uncover misconceptions. Show the video to the class, and then discuss the concept at length. For more advanced classes, provide time for students to choose a video to view and research the underlying concept. Set up a video chat time using one of these YouTube videos and a tool such as Watch Together, <a href="/single.cfm?id=13621">reviewed here</a>.
