How It Works

Explore beautiful landscapes and visit famous South African museums with this Arts and Culture presentation from Google. Scroll through the page to take a 360-degree look at Cape Peninsula and Table Mountain. Learn about the Cape of Good Hope and Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias. Additional images share the flora that is unique to the country. On a more serious note, visit Robben Island, home to the imprisoned African leader Nelson Mandela from 1964 - 1982.

In the Classroom

Engage students with this interesting site by asking them to explore it independently to introduce your unit on African countries or when learning about Nelson Mandela and his home. Be sure to show students how to use the arrows to view images from the many different angles provided. As students begin your lessons, create a Google Jamboard, reviewed here, to share interesting information learned from students’ explorations. Use their notes to guide students toward enhancing learning by choosing specific areas to explore further. For example, some students may want to learn more about the geography found in South Africa, while others may want to learn about animals or famous people. Have students share the findings of their research by writing blogs using Edublogs, reviewed here, or use Google My Maps, reviewed here, to create virtual tours around South Africa that include links to images, videos, or student writing projects to tell the story of the country.

PAT is a large collection of open source maps for every country in the world. Click on any country in the alphabetized list to view available options such as regional maps or neighboring countries. Choose from a traditional or high-contrast background color scheme. Download all maps in a zip file using links provided.

In the Classroom

Bookmark and save PAT as a resource for free printable maps for use anytime needed. Share with students to easily find and locate geographic information. Share the maps on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Share this link on your class website for students to use both in and out of the classroom.

How It Works

Discover interactive and animated representations of historic events and time periods. Choose from American, European, Latin American, or African history. Within each of these choices is a list of modules. Each module provides information and interactive content such as timelines or maps that guide you through the specified time frame. The slider at the bottom of the map allows you to move in time.

In the Classroom

View modules together as a class on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Provide links to selected modules on your class webpage or blog. Use as one source for students to create their own maps. Using a mapping tool such as Click2Map, reviewed here, rnto create a map of any specific time period or event. With Clck2Map students can include display markers featuring text, photos, and videos!

See the history of the world from 3500BC to 2005AD! TimeMaps offers a look at every nation, empire, and civilization as one story using maps. Choose a date or time period to begin exploration. Use pinpoints located on the map to view specific information about that location. Use timelines located under the map to narrow down topics within a time period. For example, at 100 AD choose to view information by Ancient Rome, Mayan Civilization, Medieval India, or Ancient China. This is an excellent site for providing an overview and exploration of world civilizations during any given time period. Choose the "Are You a History Teacher" link to find several suggestions for using TimeMap in your classroom along several different lesson plans.

In the Classroom

Explore time periods together on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Find the time period you are teaching then explore pins to view more information about different civilizations during that time. Assign students different civilizations to research during a time period using TimeMaps as a starting point. Have students create their own comics to explain a civilization using comic-creation tools from this collection.

How It Works

Special features: great database of African maps. This site offers many different maps on African countries ...anything from vegetation to political (many political). There is also a range in years; some maps date back as far as 1975. This site may be useful if you’re looking for specific detail (agriculture in 1994); however, the map files are large and may take a while to download.

In the Classroom

These maps would be an excellent addition to any civics or world history class. During a unit on Africa, open one of these maps on the interactive whiteboard or projector. Keep the map up during lecture so students can understand the location of events geographically. Geography of Africa is often ignored in schools, so it would certainly be useful to have the map open as a point of reference for students.
