The Greeks

How It Works

Part of the PBS Civilizations series, this site explores ancient Greece, complete with virtual tours of the acropolis and the Parthenon temple. In the Greeks Interactive section, students can view interactive maps and experiment with the Greek alphabet. There is also an educational resources section, complete with lesson plans for using the site.

In the Classroom

Use this site as a learning center or station during a unit on the Ancient Greeks. Have students explore the site in cooperative learning groups on classroom computers. Have students research specific aspects of the site, with the intentions of students "teaching" their peers about the many different sections. Have students create paper-posters OR use an online poster creator, such as Padlet (<a href="/single.cfm?id=10007">reviewed here</a>).

How It Works

Designed by a college professor, this site has helpful simulations for teaching a number of graphing topics for middle and high school students. There are applets for linear, quadratic, and exponential functions, as well as regression, trigonometric functions, differentiation, and integration demonstrations. The site is helpful for both demonstrations, and solving problems.

Elementary students who are fascinated by dinosaurs will love this presentation on fossils and dinosaurs. There are interactive games and several sections dealing with the evolution and eventual extinction of dinosaurs. Don’t miss "Layers of Time" an interactive about fossils and rocks. This unit is part of the American Museum of Natural History’s "Ology" series that explores different aspects of the life sciences.

How It Works

Developed as part of the National Humanities Center’s Online Professional Development “Toolbox” series, this site offers history and government teachers a wonderfully succinct resource kit for building one or more lesson units. Divided into five sections: religion, predicaments, politics, expansion, and equality, the site offers introductions and a set of primary source readings for each, along with presentation guidelines and discussion suggestions. Lots of critical analysis opportunities here.

In the Classroom

This site provides both excellent discussion questions and the primary sources needed to base it on. To begin with, copy down some of the recommended topic questions on the front page of the site before opening it on an interactive whiteboard or projector. For the students, share the primary documents available by clicking on the topic, and then selecting the one in desire. After the class has read them, begin your discussion with the questions copied earlier!

How It Works

The Library of Congress does its usually thorough job in this presentation on the roles of female journalists during World War II. These included domestic and foreign assignments. While we wish more of these images were available on line, there are certainly enough photos in this collection to provide students with a sense of what war meant to America in the 1940s.

In the Classroom

Use this site as a learning center or station during a unit on the battle front in WWII. The content is still valid, and would be a great center to break up others based on the battles and the men who are normally focused on. A useful resource for a US history classroom.

We’ve found a golden ticket! The Roald Dahl Story Company offers a colorful PDF that will enhance any classroom’s reading of this cherished chocolate tale by Roald Dahl. We love the simple but well done literacy activities accompanied by illustrated by cartoon characters. Be sure to project them as you explain the lesson. Story questions, themes, and excerpts are organized by chapter. There is a list of materials and lesson plans for sale at the end, but this review is only for this free lesson plan.

In the Classroom

This site works really well with an interactive whiteboard or projector. Students can view the cartoon figures on the board and then review what to do on the handouts on the interactive board. The printables can be used by an entire class or for individual students. During times of remote or distance learning, put a link to this site on your class web page for parents and students to use at home, with directions for what you want them to do, of course. Then ask students to create a video response about what they learned using Flipgrid, <a href="/single.cfm?id=17677">reviewed here</a>.
