How It Works

Here’s one of the rare sites with a brief lesson for the well loved story Sounder. This one, created by Easy Fun School, has some facts about the author William Armstrong and a few vocabulary word suggestions. A set of Questions and Activities are included that can be great for reading comprehension, class discussions, and as short writing assignments. Teachers will find the questions useful when planning the study of this compelling story.

In the Classroom

If you are using the questions as short writing assignments, consider having students answer them using an online blogging tool. If you are beginning the process of integrating technology, exchange pen and paper and have students create blogs sharing their learning and understanding using Telegra.ph, reviewed here. This blog creator requires no registration. If you are teaching younger students and looking for an easy way to integrate technology and check for understanding, replace pencil and paper and challenge your students to create a blog using Seesaw, reviewed here. Some of the questions call for reasearch. Challenge students to redefine their learning and present their results in a multimedia presentation such as Adobe Spark, reviewed here.

How It Works

This well-organized site from U.C. Berkeley provides middle and high school students with an introduction to cladistics (a way of organizing living things by common ancestry and evolutionary relationships) and involves students in posing hypotheses about past life based upon evolutionary history. The site was created with support from the National Science Foundation.

In the Classroom

Use this activity as a learning center or station during a unit on cladistics or evolution. Save this site as a favorite on classroom computers and have students complete the activity in pairs or cooperative learning groups. This would be a great activity during a Biology class. As an extension, students can summarize what they learned in an flow chart or graphic organizer such as Holt Interactive Graphic Organizers, reviewed here.

How It Works

This is an elegantly designed geography site offering vital statistics and more for many, many countries. It’s a "just the facts" approach, but there are lots of them. The site includes a novel currency converter feature.

In the Classroom

This site would be great in a geography or World History classroom, helping students review for a final assessment. Have students "plan" a trip to some of the places/times studied in your class. Have them maintain a budget with their trip, and use this site to help students translate their financial dealings to have it all make sense. This is a great way to get students thinking about the mechanics of travel, as well as a great way to review the geography of the places being studied - both culturally and physically.rn

How It Works

This site, created for eighth grade students, offers links to activities in math, science, social studies, language arts, creative arts, and a reference library. Some of the subject areas only offer one or two activities, while others offer several topics. The topics vary greatly and include measuring angles, multiplying decimals, the human body (skeleton, heart, muscles), vertebrates and invertebrates, the Civil War, the War of 1812, and some language arts topics (writing topic sentences, using figurative language, analogies, writing about cause and effect, and several others). Be aware: some of the language arts topics lead you to another educational site and are not as simple to use as in other subject areas. The language arts link is under construction and several are currently unavailable. rn

rnAlthough some of the activities are not highly interactive (some are simple online quizzes), they are well done and could be very useful in the classroom. There are also interactive diagrams and more. Some of the pages do have advertisements, but they are not distractive. Some activities require Flash, but there are others that don’t.
