How It Works

Designed by Dr. Nigel Saunders, Head of Chemistry, Harrogate Granby High School, UK, this site is loaded with "outside of the box" approaches to understanding and applying principles of science and chemistry. Interactive crossword puzzles, games, "missions," PowerPoint shows, and quizzes can be used as entertaining and productive review tools for students. Structured worksheets are also provided to guide hands-on experiments on a variety of chemistry-related topics. Many of the ideas provided on this site would be ideal for use with a Chemistry Club. (Java, Javascript, and Adobe Acrobat Reader 4 or higher required.)

How It Works

Geography, world cultures, and science students exploring Antarctica may want to prowl through this glossary of terms used at the scientific stations in Antarctica. While the site is useful mostly to give a sense of the off-beat flavor of this environment, it does have some interesting “life in Antarctica” elements between the lines. Teachers and parents should preview this one thoroughly before turning their students loose on it.

In the Classroom

If studying Antartica in depth, use this vocabulary as a way to show students what living on "The Ice," is like. Have students write short stories or letters, from the perspective of someone who is there - using the vocabulary on this site. Students will probably be entertained at how ridiculous some of it sounds, but it will definitely get them engaged in the topic.

Created by a physics teacher, this site offers a collection of webquest-like and similar interactive activities that help explain topics typically found in a physics curriculum. As with any such collection, the quality of the resources varies, but you’ll likely find one or more that fit nicely with your own curriculum.

In the Classroom

While not technically a webquest, this site has a lot of extension activities that could be used at the end of a lesson or as a review before a new one. Accommodate today’s students, and have them complete the activities on Google Docs, <a href="/single.cfm?id=8030">reviewed here</a>, making it easier for them to receive feedback and reduce the amount of messy papers you need to grade.

This educational software is designed to allow teachers to plan biology and ecology lessons using a helpful, user-friendly simulations. Along with the software, the site has a teachers’ guide with suggestions for integrating the simulation into the classroom through three main units. The site also provides a template for planning lessons based on the online curriculum. Be sure to click Learn to find the resources for kids. Abolitionism in America

How It Works

This Cornell University online exhibit provides a detailed portrait of the abolitionist movement in America ready for classroom use. The site examines the origins of the movement, provides detailed descriptions of life as a slave, and discusses the importance of the emancipation proclamation and the thirteenth amendment in the struggle against slavery. The site combines historic narrative with literary and biographical resources to highlight the important cultural role the abolitionist movement played in the United States.

In the Classroom

Use the images on this site to create a "picture walk" in your classroom, introducing the topic of Abolitionism. Select 10-15 of the more powerful and diverse images, hanging them up in different locations around your classroom. Have students rotate around the classroom every 30-45 seconds, jotting down what they observe and infer about each image until the entire class has completed the circuit. After the class is back in their seats, have a class discussion based on what they observed and what this says about abolitionism as well as slavery. A great way to get students thinking about the content in a way that’s more personal and lecture-less!

Though not as interactive as other installments in the PBS Empires series, this site has helpful resources for tracing the history of Christianity in the context of High School World Cultures and Western Heritage courses. The timeline, in particular, helps illustrate the simultaneous evolution of the Roman Empire and Christianity.

In the Classroom

Save this site as a favorite and use it as a learning center or station. To show what they have learned from this site, challenge students to create an online graphic to share using Visme, <a href="/single.cfm?id=15508">reviewed here</a>. This site would be an interesting perspective to examine the monstrosity that was the Roman Empire, and how it impacted areas all over the world.

The interactive map and hieroglyph translator provide an interesting lens through which students can view life in this era. Like other PBS empire sites, this site has a listing of lesson plans for expanding on these resources.
