How It Works

This website offers a fairly comprehensive like/dislike work personality profile. Although created in Pennsylvania, the site is universally helpful. (There are other quizzes and occupation information available at the homepage.) It is a very long survey (180 questions at the time of this review), but it can be saved in process which is a very helpful feature. Students answer simply "like," "dislike," or "not sure." Once the profile is completed, an interest profile is developed and the meanings of the interests can be referenced in the first type of assessment. Jobs that are highly related to the individuals’ interest profile are linked here. The specific occupations are linked to information on the career including descriptions, education requirements, experience and skills needed to perform the job. Also, basic career information is also available to search without doing the interest assessment.

In the Classroom

This site could be applied to any course. It could be invaluable to guidance classes, family and consumer sciences, and business courses. This would be a great introductory lab for any of those classes as well as others. Demonstrate on an interactive whiteboard or projector and then have students work on individual computers to take the survey. Have students access the site and complete the survey and do a simple research into three different possibilities. Then have students reflect on the careers that surprised them as well as the ones with which they thought they would want to do. Have students create "a day in the life" blog entries related to a day on the job of one of the careers suited for them.

The Life and Voyages of Henry Hudson

How It Works

This site details the life and many attempted voyages of the English explorer Henry Hudson. Although the site is very "wordy," it is very inclusive and excellent for research. It includes a lot of facts, maps, information about each voyage, information about nautical measurements, and details about his ships and crews. The information and maps available here are based on the author combing historical books and documents and information. An extensive bibliography and list of weblinks relating to Hudson adds interest to the maps and history on the site.

In the Classroom

Have the students make a cumulative map of all Hudson’s voyages together in order for them to get a chance to become intimately familiar with the map making process. Try a site such as Zeemaps, <a href="/single.cfm?id=15592">reviewed here</a>. Zeemaps allows students to create audio recordings AND choose a location on a map where each story takes place. Have each cooperative learning group focus on a different exploration. Compare their creations with the online map which has all four voyages combined. Assign students in a group each a few pages of an imagined journal Henry might have written on each voyage. The most interesting part will be to imagine what happened to him after people no longer heard from him! Use this site as the starting point for individual research papers. Encourage students to find other resources that contribute to their knowledge of Henry Hudson. Have students write a talk Hudson might give if he suddenly woke up today (like Rip Van Winkle). Or make it more Web 2.0 and have students write blog entries. The text passages on this site are also ideal for reading comprehension practice. Project them on an interactive whiteboard for practice in main idea, summarizing, and more.

In the Classroom

Identify the various techniques and science behind them. For example, browning meat is called the Malliard reaction. Understanding why this brings out the best flavor in the meat is interesting. Learn about sugar substitutes, its use in cooking, and relationship to flavor. Identify taste and how we are able to sense tastes at the molecular level. Follow discussion of techniques with actual use of the technique and resultant taste tests. During a cooking lesson, why not have cooperative learning groups try something they learned? Video their “experiment” and share with the class (and parents) using a tool such as TeacherTube <a href="/single.cfm?id=9419">reviewed here</a>.

Choose Fuels to identify similarities and differences between the various types of hydrocarbons. Such lists can bring to life the molecular formulas of the compounds and the resulting chemical and physical properties. Discuss the energy required to break down these molecules through the process of combustion. View the food molecules to identify why the calorie amount for each is different. Create a discussion of how different biomolecules are used in the body. This site is a searchable database of science quotes from different scientists and philosophers. This site is a basic "plain vanilla" tool, but includes a lot of scientists and philosophers (great for reference and quick research). Searches can be done by keyword, names, or alphabetically. The drawback to the site is that there are some distracting commercial features. Direction would need to be given to younger students on differentiating between advertisements and site content.

In the Classroom

This site would be great for creating cross curriculum units with language arts and science. It could be used as a resource for teachers. Students could search for quotes relevant to scientists being studied. Students could also choose a favorite quote as a prompt for a blog post. Have students create bulletin board posters using favorite quotes and adding images to them using a tool such as Web Poster Wizard (<a href="/single.cfm?id=7332">reviewed here</a>) or an online "poster" about a scientist using a tool such as Nota (<a href="/single.cfm?id=9915">reviewed here</a>).

This site presents median, mode, and range in an engaging way (using playing cards and SHARKS). After detailed audio instructions, students are ready to "play." You can click "Skip Directions" if you have visited before. Students are dealt 5 cards; they are able to exchange up to 3 cards to try to improve their score. Students are asked various questions about the cards (find the mean of the 5 cards, what is the mode, what is the range between the highest and lowest, and others). Share the introduction on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Then allow students to navigate this site on their own. This is a wonderful addition to a unit on average, mean, mode, etc. Why not have students create their OWN similar challenge on a class wiki. How It Works

If you are looking for podcasts to lure your students to the study of language and words, this is a great site to investigate. <i>A Way with Words</i> is an hour-long radio show on PBS, currently hosted by Martha Barnett and Grant Barrett. The show features lively discussion about "slang, grammar, old sayings, word origins, regional dialects, family expressions, and speaking and writing well." Listening to any of the old shows is entertaining as well as informative. The topics are listed on the home page along with summaries. Get more programs by clicking on "Get the podcast" in the right-hand menu. They are appealing, with provocative titles such as "What the Cluck?," "Elvis in a Cheese Sandwich," and "Coinkydinks and Big Boxes." There are full hour podcasts and mini-podcasts.

In the Classroom

Plug in your students to get discussion started about any relevant-to-your-class topic. Students increasingly want to listen through headphones; let them enjoy these entertaining and informative podcasts on language, then use class questions posted on an interactive whiteboard or projector to generate full-class discussion. Language never sounded so good! Have students create similar projects in cooperative learning groups. How about podcasts using a site such as PodOMatic (<a href="/single.cfm?id=8094">reviewed here</a>).

HealthMap brings up to date data from multiple sources into one place for better visualizing. Click on the Blog link to access specific information about diseases including symptoms and treatment. Refine your search on the map by disease, category, or region of the world. This site can be viewed in French, Spanish, and several other languages.

In the Classroom

Use this site whether you are discussing illness and viruses, socioeconomic factors that affect disease rates, or looking to offer a critical thinking exercise for your students. Have groups of students choose a continent. As a group, have them investigate the diseases, where they are concentrated, and the factors involved in the transmission. Students can share findings on posters or using a wiki or blog. For quicker projects, create electronic "posters" or word graphics using tools such as Piclits (reviewed here) or Typogenerator (reviewed here).rn

rnAs the groups find information, they may find parallels to other group’s work that can spark discussions between the groups. Through use of this site, encourage student groups to look beyond the biology of diseases to research living conditions in other areas of the world.

Filled with a variety of essential language art skills, this site is a super teaching opportunity to be followed by students working on their own. With 42 lessons ranging from “Differentiating between who/whom" to “Writing Sonnets” to "Crafting Your Character’s Dialogue in Your Screenplay," there is plenty to suit your particular class needs. You are able to write replies (comments), however an email address is required. Registration is not required for any other part of this site. rn<br><br>rnThis site does offer the option of signing up for RSS feeds. There are some unobtrusive advertisements at the site. rnrnrn

In the Classroom

These lessons give great examples as well as "pop quizzes" as you go through them. It would be great to do these on a projector or interactive whiteboard, having students comment as you go; then you can assign their own writing to follow up. Of particular interest is the lesson on "note taking on a computer." As essential as computers are to writing these days, it may be the best place to begin. This might also be a good site to link from your class website. It is very easy for students to explore on their own and get extra help where needed. Or have small groups investigate a specific area together and then create a multimedia presentation to share with the class. Have the groups create a podcast to share using a tool such as Podomatic (<a href="/single.cfm?id=8094">reviewed here</a>).
