rnLooking for an engaging and unique way for students to demonstrate competency? Try Edpuzzle student projects. This free and flexible online tool helps students show-what-they-know while honing real-world skills. Annotating video provides students with opportunities to practice communicating complex ideas and creating authentic media. Allowing students to reflect on what they’ve learned and their learning process using a nonstandard assessment measure provides a more accurate assessment of what the students know. Plus, it’s just fun! As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Explore Edpuzzle student projects; 2. Create an exemplar to share with students; and 3. Plan for the use of Edpuzzle student projects as part of instruction. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

In the Classroom

Consider using videos in your classroom in a variety of ways. Upload your slide presentations and add audio to create flipped and blended learning experiences for your students. Ask students to create videos as an alternative to book reports or written presentations. Share videos on your class website for students to access when away from the classroom. As you ask students to create videos, use a bookmarking site such as Padlet, reviewed here, to share and organize information for students to use when researching. Include Adobe Spark Videos as part of a larger presentation using Book Creator, reviewed here. Embed your video along with images, text, drawings, and other media into your digital book creation. Book Creator is a Chrome app.

How It Works

In this lesson plan, students use analysis techniques to learn about different types of soil and examine the relationship between plant growth and healthy soil. Links to resource materials, including videos, student handouts, and extension activities, are all included. Activities include student research and analysis of dry and moist soil features. Extension activities guide further learning through the examination of natural water filters and garden habitats. Lessons are correlated to Common Core Standards and Next Generation Science Standards.

In the Classroom

Take advantage of these hands-on investigative lessons to engage students in learning about types of soil. Have students document their learning by taking pictures and sharing videos of their investigations on your class website. Instead of printing student handouts, engage students by having them input information using mobile devices and classroom computers. How It Works

Periodic Videos provides videos and lessons teaching about each element on the periodic table. Choose any element to view a short video (most are less than 10 minutes) demonstrating the properties and providing background information on the element offered by university scientists. Each video also provides a link to a complete TED-ED lesson including questions for discussion and further exploration. Use the filters on this site to sort the elements displayed into different categories including halogens, non-metals, and more. If your district blocks YouTube, videos may not be viewable. This site suggests that you contact whoever administers your school’s IT systems to see if you can whitelist videos that are embedded on ed.ted.com.

In the Classroom

Include this resource with your other materials for teaching about the periodic table and chemical elements. Customize any of the lessons within TED-ED to meet your lesson objectives. Register for a free account, then follow the steps to duplicate and edit the lesson to meet your needs and share with students. Be sure to share this site with students to use as part of their review and learning activities. Share all of your bookmarked sites with students using a bookmarking tool like SearchTeam, reviewed here. SearchTeam includes tools for collaborating and sharing online resources and provides the ability for you or your students to add notes and comments to shared resources. Include this site and others to provide differentiated learning activities for your students using Symbaloo Learning Paths, reviewed here. In addition to web resources like Periodic Videos, Symbaloo Learning Paths provides options for including quizzes, uploading documents, and more to create an entire unit in one place. Do you need "out of this world" images? NASA provides images, video, and audio for non-commercial use, free. Browse through the newest uploads or most popular items to get an idea of included items. If looking for specific topics, use the search bar to locate material by keyword, then use the filters to narrow down by the type of content desired. All items include a link to download to your computer along with links to share by URL or with social media. Be sure to check out the Media Usage guidelines for complete details on the usage of the site’s content.

In the Classroom

Include this site with your other bookmarks for images and space-related content. Use Symbaloo, reviewed here, to share all of your space bookmarks in one easy to find location. This NASA site is an excellent resource for finding images to use with creative writing prompts; display an interesting image from the site for student storytelling lessons. Exchange paper and pen writing journals, and share their writing using Edublog, reviewed here. As students learn about space topics, ask them to find an image on this site then use ThingLink, reviewed here, to enhance their learning by annotating the image with text, video, and web links to additional information. Extend student learning by having students create a video presentation about space using a video creation tool like Typito, reviewed here. Typito includes templates and additional tools to create professional-looking videos or use your own images and video.

Save the Video

How It Works

Save the Video converts and downloads videos from several different video hosting sites including YouTube and Vimeo. Paste the video link then choose to download, convert to mp3, or convert and cut your video. One of the most interesting features of this site is the option to download playlists, convert into smaller files, then cut or crop to merge videos into one single video. Convert and cut takes you to a different application to use after downloading the video file to your computer.

In the Classroom

Save the Video provides options for using videos in the classroom that may otherwise be unavailable due to district filters. Take advantage of the site’s features to download and convert playlists to create and share content specifically tailored to your needs. For example, find your favorite videos on habitats, create a playlist, then use Save the Video to create a single video about habitats with only the content you choose. Take your videos a step further and modify them using playposit, reviewed here, to add comments and questions onto your video for students to view and answer. Playposit also offers the option for students to add comments. Include your video along with your other student resources within a presentation created using Sway, reviewed here, for easy access to all materials. If you teach younger students, create videos of them sharing information about your topic, then use Save the Video to combine their responses into a single video. For older students, ask them to create their own video using tools found on the site and use Sway to create their own presentation, including videos, images, and text.
