Teaching History with 100 Objects

How It Works

If you could have 100 objects from throughout history, how would you use them in your teaching? The British Museum delves into its collections and provides a rotating group of 100 objects. Each object is categorized by time period, theme, and place. The objects can be searched and grouped accordingly. Each object has extensive supporting information, lesson plan ideas, essential questions, and suggestions for linkages to other objects. A PDF download for each object is available for classroom handouts. Finally, there are links to outside resources for further study. There are also connections to Key Stage (grade level) and Curriculum area that are specific to the British educational system. If you aren’t familiar with Key Stages: Stage 1 is K-2, Stage 2 is grades 3-5, Stage 3 is grades 6-8, Stage 4 is grades 9-10, and Stage 5 is grades 11-12. Since this site was created in the UK, American English speakers may notice some slight spelling differences.

In the Classroom

While the objects are classified with an eye toward their relevance to British history, there are plenty of connections to historical inquiry regardless of geographic area. If you are not focusing on British history yourself, consider using this concept to challenge students to select 100 (or some more manageable number) objects to represent their area of interest. What 100 objects might represent their community’s history? Their school’s history? Their family’s history? From a historian’s perspective, how do objects represent historical themes? How can we discover more about a culture or historical time period by examining the objects of that time? Why and how do historians choose particular objects to put into museums, and how do those objects tell a story? How could you create a "museum" of your school or of your community using objects?

How It Works

Visit Cool Kid Facts to find information for just about anything in this world or even <i>out</i> of this world! Select from Geography, History, Science, Animals, and Human Body. There are also topics in the right menu on the home page that range from Albert Einstein to Volcanoes and nearly everything else you can think of (alphabetically) in between. There are articles, videos, pictures, and quizzes, too. The videos are from various outside sources and are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, they may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

Share this site with students on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) and show them all the different subjects available. Challenge students to find a topic about which they know nothing (or barely anything). This site will give them experience reading informational text on a topic they wonder about. Partner weaker readers with others who may be able to help them read the text-heavier articles. Have students read and research individually or in small groups taking notes using a simple graphic organizer from 25 Language Arts Graphic Organizers, <a href="/single.cfm?id=14252">reviewed here</a>. Use this opportunity to teach summarizing, and citing sources. Cool Kid Facts is a great tool to build background knowledge about all sorts of topics!

Have you ever just had a word on the "tip of your tongue"? You know what it means, you just can’t think of the exact word, only its synonyms? With this tool, you can search by Word Meaning. Ever been stuck on how to spell a word? With this tool, you can search Partial Words by Starts With, Contains, or Ends With. Note: the source dictionary this site uses includes "adult" words. Discuss appropriate use with young people.

In the Classroom

Create a bookmark/favorite on class computers and your class website for students to use when they just cannot think of the right word. Use for word games like Hangman or Monopoly. Use to solve crossword puzzles. Have students look up words they do not know how to spell! Use this tool with ESL/ELL students as an interesting way to learn new words. As with any online dictionary intended for all ages, you will need to set explicit consequences for students "looking up" inappropriate words-- just as you would for saying those words out loud in your classroom! Share this tool with parents at back to school night as an interesting tool for the whole family to use.

How It Works

Investigate these videos for teaching young children. Select videos by most recent, most popular, or from the subject menu on the left. Not all of the subjects have an accompanying set of videos for this age group. The videos have a written description. Some of the most useful videos not only provide background information, but also suggest and explain activities. Click on the picture of the video to view that video and its description. There will also be a link to the series, if there is one. Clicking on the text link will take you to all of the videos in the series.

In the Classroom

Use this site to extend your early learning professional development. Share links to some videos of interest at a staff meeting or as professional development. If you are part of a professional development presentation, you may want to edit the videos to show only parts of it. Editing the videos to just what you want to show is a real class time saver.

How It Works

Though designed for children, all age groups can create a business plan using this educational platform. Learn basic business concepts including teamwork, strategic planning, assembly line production, competition, revenue, and investment. All the learning resources and themes are available here, so start thinking like an entrepreneur. The lessons are downloadable in PDF format. Each of the lessons includes a discussion of a book. It is not necessary to have read the book to complete the lessons successfully. There are short videos about different business concepts hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, they may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

Though these lessons are for first through fifth grade, they can easily be adapted for older students. You really don’t need the suggested book for these lessons. Your students will learn plenty about collaboration, teamwork, vocabulary, and math. They will also learn many business concepts (a product vs. a service business). Explore the Bear &amp; Bull Markets and investments, copyright, factories, loans, merchandise, pricing, and much more! Each of the six lessons is 50 to 60 minutes long. Click on the Learn tab at the top to find a glossary. There is also a Kids Business Plan template and other worksheets, Quick Ideas, and Do-it-at-Home ideas, videos, and more. Share this site with gifted students for enrichment in your classroom. The lesson can be used once a week for six weeks, twice a week for three weeks, or however you want to configure them. The "finale" is a "Business Fair" with plenty of ideas from which to choose.

In the Classroom

Use this site when discussing ecology, wildlife, or nature in general. View the Outdoor Recreation and Wildlife Cameras links under the Discover tab for great ideas to get out into nature or view wildlife. Use a webcam for students to practice scientific observation! Choose a recipe from the Cooking link to create and share with others. Give students an opportunity to look at the material around the site and share what they find with others in the class. Be sure to include this link when providing resources for students to generate reports or presentations on wildlife and nature.

In the Classroom

Study the bald eagle and its current status as no longer endangered. Use as a research site for bald eagle information. Show the video under the Festivals tab on your projector or interactive whiteboard. Look for an animal in your area, and research it. Do a Problem Based Learning Project on creating dioramas and information for creating public awareness.
