How It Works

Interested in coding and looking for others who are interested as well? CoderDojo is an open source movement of free coding clubs for young kids that is led by volunteers and found around the World. Activities vary with each "club" but all focus on coding. Click "Organize a Dojo" to become a volunteer organizer. You are then responsible for setting up and maintaining the dojo. Not a coding master? Don’t let that discourage you. Organizers are responsible for bringing learners and technical experts together. Students can click "Attend a Dojo" to find a location nearby to join. Volunteers can also find a dojo nearby to offer their services.

In the Classroom

When asked, explain that coding is just another "world language" in today’s world. Team up with the PTA/PTO or other groups in your community to find others interested in being part of a Coderdojo. Your Coderdojo can be considered an after school club, but on a larger scale can bring students from various backgrounds together for the common purpose of learning to code.

Number Talks supports the Standards of Mathematical Practice in the Common Core Standards for all grade levels. The video helps one understand the process of number sense, flexible thinking in problem-solving, and fluency. Examples of the Number Talks are shown in use in real classrooms where students manipulate numbers to gain a deeper understanding. Students reason abstractly and quantitatively to help persevere in solving problems. Students use models to find structure and use reasoning to provide evidence for answers and thought processes. Gain a fuller, deeper understanding of the process of Number Talks. Number Talks are often used in many schools’ curriculum. If your district blocks YouTube, the video may not be viewable.

How It Works

Provide the best literacy program for your students by implementing ideas and assessments from Reading and Writing Resources Project. Find high quality, research-based reading and writing resources developed by a Teachers College, Columbia University and Lucy Caulkins. Assessment information includes running records, the concept of print, letter/sound information, high-frequency words, and independent reading benchmarks. Additional Assessments include Independent Reading Books, Comprehension Proficiency, and Monitor Reading Volume and Stamina with book logs and daily reading examples. Under Book Lists find units of study for teen readers with titles and authors categorized by genre with quality literature suggestions. Many videos depict classes in action discovering Narrative, Informative/Explanatory, and Opinion/Argument writing. One video series shows Danielson’s Framework for Teaching evaluations, with classroom teachers being observed using reading/writing workshop. This includes PDF’s with the notes and scoring. Find a baseline of excellent student writing sorted by grade level using Readers’ Notebook and student writing samples. Nonfiction text sets give examples or resources for you to use in the classroom. Find text examples to use with your students featuring health and consumer science topics.

The Diabetes Quiz is a free educational resource to help you learn about diabetes, healthy bodies, and minds. There are 400 multiple choice questions about diabetes basics, diet and nutrition, fitness and exercise, stress and relaxation, and statistics. Take a quiz and find out what you know. Make a plan for a better you! Diabetes Quiz will work on any device with a modern web browser and an Internet connection.

In the Classroom

Use the Diabetes Quiz in your unit on health and body, body systems, relaxation and stress, or nutrition. Present on your interactive whiteboard or projector and use this as a model to hook your students. Students then research further and find out other pertinent information to further their studies. Use as a review for a test. Present on your daily announcements to get students thinking of ways to improve their own health. Let this kick off a school-wide study on healthy bodies and minds. Browse resources by category, type, required plug-ins, or level. Each resource includes a short description, estimated time to complete, and appropriate age levels. All activities correlate to state and Common Core Standards. Click the Standards link in each lesson to view corresponding standards for each activity. Create an account to save items to favorites and connect to your school. Generate an account code for your students to create student accounts. Be sure to disable your browser’s pop up blocker for this site to allow interactives to load.

The Baltimore Museum of Art offers resources for educators to support classroom curriculum and enhance student learning across disciplines. Museum featured artwork provides the content for detailed lessons. The online images contain background information on the artist, other pieces of that time, and content connections to curriculum. The areas of concentration for the lessons are: Young America, Symbol of the New Republic, Made in Maryland, Western Perspectives, Unity in Diversity, The Art in Technology, Picturing Memory, and Shaping New Traditions. Activity sheets contain directions for projects to make such as: an animal stool inspired by the Lozi people, Recoloring Camouflage, and Inkblot pictures inspired by Andy Warhol, Cezanne, Matisse, Poster activity by Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri Matisse, and French Line Drawings. View Multimedia Presentations about Frans Hals, Raphael, Chinese wall hanging, Albrecht Durer, among many others. Finally, a series of prints contain background information on the subject and the artist that allow further study. Sign up for Art to Go monthly email that contains a printable full-color image of an artwork at the Baltimore Museum of Art. A brief commentary focuses on teaching ideas, while the challenge project invites students to try this idea and bring it into their own style. There is a plethora of ideas and lessons on this site, however, a very FEW still require Flash. Those are usually described as "interacive."

Enjoy improvising on the virtual pan flute. Use your cursor to click the pipes to play the different notes or you can use your keyboard. Create songs or melodies. Practice rhythm and learning the beat.

In the Classroom

Let your composers go on the pan flute. Teach (and practice) rhythm using this tool. Create a melody for your story and create a mood. Use the pan flute to improve your students’ short-term memory. Combine with vocabulary or spelling words to create rhythms to aid memorization. Use the pipe to make a melody for each character in a story. Add a melody to a text to create excitement and suspense. Have your students create different melodies to represent themselves and write to explain.

How It Works

Bookopolis is more than an online social reading club for children ages 7-12. It has an education portal to keep track of and review a reader’s work. Scroll down the landing page to find recommended books, popular books, books by grade level, and read ratings and reviews from other readers. Bookopolis includes digital reading logs, reading log prompts, and suggests places to find comprehension questions about the book. Through the educator dashboard, monitor and comment on the reader’s writing and reading logs. The activities and features on the site are aligned with many of the Common Core Reading and Writing standards. There are several video tutorials on getting started and how to use the dashboard. The videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, they may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

Create your account with one of several social media programs, or your email, teacher name, username, and some basic information. Create your dashboard by adding a class and class name. You can create multiple classes. From the teacher dashboard on right menu choose Teacher Resources to view the several teacher video tutorials to get started. Click the class name to add students; student accounts can be created manually or by importing an XLS or CSV file. Students will automatically be "friends" with other students in the same class, but can also invite students from different classes. Share this site with students (and parents at back to school night) using your interactive whiteboard or projector. Students also have video tutorials; show students the video tutorial "How to Add Books" to get them started. In your blended or remote learning classroom enhance students’ learning for this tool using the tutorial (s) along with Vizia, <a href="/single.cfm?id=17848">reviewed here</a>, to add comments and information. Students can create bookshelves for books they are reading, that they have read, and that they want to read. Students can earn points and badges for the books they read. This tool will get students excited about reading since they can connect with friends to share book reviews and swap book recommendations. Students also practice persuasive writing, comprehension, and typing skills by completing reviews, reports, and reading logs online. This tool is great to keep track of student home reading or if you are teaching remotely! Besure to list this site in a parent newsletter or on your website as one to use to avoid the "summer reading slide."

This is a hot topic in many locations suffering through droughts. Be sure to look at the latest news and information in the energy saving toolkit. The toolkit includes interactive activities to teach water conservation. Find 100+ ways to conserve in the tab along the top and numerous resources under the Kids and Resources tabs.

In the Classroom

Use the information from this site for inspiration in the creation of digital or conventional posters for water conservation. Create a campaign for increasing water conservation in school and at home. Survey the school community on their water usage using a tool such as SurveyRock, <a href="/single.cfm?id=15871">reviewed here.</a> Calculate the amount of water saved as a Math activity. Use this site on a computer during learning centers when studying other environmental issues.
