How It Works

This extremely well-organized site from U.C. Berkeley introduces students to the history of life and how it results in today’s biodiversity. The site includes two different levels for grades K-4 and 5-12, making this an introduction that can be used in virtually any classroom setting. There is a Teacher Guide with lesson plans, handouts, assessments, related activities and much more. Created with support from the National Science Foundation.

In the Classroom

Introduce this activity with a projector or on an interactive whiteboard to show students how to navigate the site. Then, in your flipped or blended classroom (or at a computer center), have students explore on their own. Ask students to create blogs sharing their learning and understanding using Telegra.ph, <a href="/single.cfm?id=17846">reviewed here</a>. With Telegra.ph you just click on an icon to upload images from your computer, add a YouTube or Vimeo, or Twitter links. This blog creator requires no registration. Take this a step further and allow pairs or small groups of students to explore Related Activities and share what they learned with their peers using an interactive poster like Lucidpress, <a href="/single.cfm?id=16745">reviewed here</a>. Students can keep their work for future reference in a digital portfolio such as Pathbrite, <a href="/single.cfm?id=14067">reviewed here</a>.

This is a collection of on-screen, multi-lingual picture books. Most of the stories are folk tales from specific cultures, but a few are simply stories that would interest K-3 students. The site is set up as a page-by-page “read-along” that teachers could use with small groups of students. Early readers could also use the site on their own.

Use it to help young children "work on feelings about separation and independence, memory skills, developing self-control, and expressing feelings." There are three videos to watch and discuss, as well as resources for classroom use, and resources to share with parents about separation.

Discover the delightful Daniel Tiger and his friends and family through these videos. Even your youngest nursery school students will be able to relate to the characters, images, and story in these three films. They will probably want to watch them again and again! Parents and students alike will benefit from the resources provided. There is also a Teacher Tips sheet that provides suggestions for helping children adjust to separating from their families for awhile. This Library of Congress exhibition showing historic photos of children probably has some academic application. We’ve included it, however, as an eloquent statement of why children are important, and why teachers teach. Try showing one of these pictures to your class and asking them to write about what the child in the picture might be thinking or doing.

Use the images on this site to inspire some creative writing! Allow students to explore the site on classroom computers, picking one of the images to choose as the subject of a creative writing piece. Have students write an essay, poem, editorial - depending on what’s being studied, based on what they see in their image. Attach the images to their pieces, and it could make a great display in your classroom too! A fun site for a Literature or Language classroom.

How It Works

Welcome to the Library of Congress’ photo archive. This site offers a searchable database containing thousands of photos all almost any subject. History and social studies teachers will find this a rich resource for “what was life like then?” images, old maps, and other printed matter. Note that not all of these images are guaranteed “copyright free,” but this collection was established largely for educational and research uses, so most images are freely usable in that context.

In the Classroom

Use the images on this site to create a "picture walk" in your classroom, introducing any number of the topics hosted. Select 10-15 of the more powerful and diverse images, hanging them up in different locations around your classroom. Have students rotate around the classroom every 30-45 seconds, jotting down what they observe and infer about each image until the entire class has completed the circuit. After the class is back in their seats, have a class discussion based on what they observed and what this says about historical events. A great way to get students thinking about the content in a way that’s more personal and lecture-less!
