How It Works

Adobe Education and Khan Academy have partnered to share guided activities for all grade levels from kindergarten through higher learning. Activities begin with Khan Academy created materials to build knowledge through activities that encourage creation, self-expression, and immersion in the topics provided. Select any topic to view a description and correlation to ISTE learning standards. Topics include math, language and literature, science, and social studies. Sign in to download each lesson to your computer that provides for links to all activities and tutorials for using technology tools included in the activities.

In the Classroom

Bookmark this excellent site to use as a resource for finding and developing lessons for both in-person and online learning. Lessons found on this site includes links to videos and articles found on the Khan Academy website, use bookmarking and collaborative resources such as Symbaloo EDU, reviewed here, or Padlet, reviewed here, to share the Khan Academy links along with other helpful resources for students. Use a word cloud tool like WordClouds, reviewed here, to motivate and encourage students to think about the topics shared at the beginning of your activities. Embark on an incredible literature adventure as Astronaut Anne McClain reads a book on video. <i>Ada Lace, Take Me to Your Leader</i> by Emily Calandrelli is a story about a third-grader and "inventor extraordinaire." Listen to this three-part story as you learn about Ada Lace’s latest invention, a ham radio used to contact people on this planet...and beyond. Strange noises are heard over the ham radio leading Ada Lace to believe that aliens are planning to invade Earth. Listen to the story to find out what happens next on this journey! The story is divided into three short videos ranging from 13 minutes to 22 minutes in length.

In the Classroom

This ebook could be used as a whole-group activity by sharing the video on your projector. Students could also view the video on individual devices (don’t forget the earbuds). This is a great book to use to connect science and language arts. After each part of the story, extend the learning, and have students answer a teacher-directed question or summarize the main events. After parts one or two, you could have students write predictions about what they think will happen next. Challenge your students to create simple blog posts using Edublog, <a href="/single.cfm?id=13449">reviewed here</a>. If students are too young for writing, have them create video responses using a tool such as Flipgrid <a href="/single.cfm?id=17677">reviewed here</a>.

In the Classroom

Introduce your students to Kwanzaa by taking the quiz to see how much they know about Kwanzaa. rnThen in pairs or small groups, have students research the terms. As students research, substitute paper and pen journals by asking younger students to create a blog using a tool like Penzu, <a href="/single.cfm?id=11465">reviewed here</a>, to share what they are learning with fellow students. A great blogging tool for older students is Telegra.ph, <a href="/single.cfm?id=17846">reviewed here</a>. With Telegra.ph have students click on an icon to upload related images, add YouTube or Vimeo, or Twitter links. Engage older students, by having them create a poster about Kwanzaa using a tool like DesignCap, <a href="/single.cfm?id=18206">reviewed here</a>, and then upload the poster to their blog about the terms and what they’ve learned about this December holiday.

Ruff Ruffman - Humble Media Genius

How It Works

Ruff Ruffman is a comical canine who sets out to teach kids (ages 6-11) about being a responsible digital citizen. Short animated video clips answer questions about posting photos, texting, and searching, reminding kids to ask an adult for help with the more difficult undertakings like finding a kid-friendly search engine. This program also has discussion questions for parents and teachers and interactive quizzes. Creating an account isn’t required to use any material on the site. To create an account, you will need a username and a random password will be assigned, which can you can change later.

In the Classroom

Introduce Ruff Ruffman with a projector or interactive whiteboard, showing students all of the different questions Ruff will answer. Then either view the video shorts and quizzes as a class, or allow students to view the video shorts and take the interactive quizzes at a computer center. As a substitute for paper and pencil, have students use a video response tool like FlipGrid, <a href="/single.cfm?id=17677">reviewed here</a>, to reflect on their learning and share tips for their peers. To extend student learning, require students to view their peer’s reflections and make thoughtful comments.

How It Works

Fractions is an app that is available online or for download from iTunes and Chrome. Use the app to explore and investigate fractions using the different available options. Add fraction bars or circles to your workspace and divide into up to 100 equal parts. Other options include text options including math symbols and drawing tools. <i>At the time of this review the web app did not appear to be working.</i>The chrome app works.

In the Classroom

Include a link to this app or download onto mobile devices for students to explore and practice working with fractions. Take advantage of the additional free resources included on this site that use the app to work with fractions. Ask students to take a screen shot of their fraction work and share concepts they discover or questions they have. Consider creating a class book with your fraction image and video and audio recordings using Book Creator, <a href="/single.cfm?id=17988">reviewed here</a>.
