In the Classroom

Create regular or special podcasts to share on your class web page or wiki. Looking for even more ideas? Record class assignments or directions. Record story time or a reading excerpt for younger ones to listen to at a computer center AND from home, adding a touch of blended learning to your classroom! Have readers (perhaps older buddies) enhance their learning and build fluency by recording selected passages for your non-readers. Launch a service project for your fifth or sixth graders to record stories for the kindergarten to use in their reading and listening center. Challenge students to create "you are there" recordings as "eyewitnesses" to historical or current events. Make a weekly class podcast, with students taking turns writing and sharing the "Class News," encourage and extend learning and have students create radio advertisements for concepts studied in class (Buy Dynamic DNA!). Invite students to write and record their own stories or poetry in dramatic readings. Language students or beginning readers could record their fluency by reading passages. Allow parents to hear their child’s progress reading aloud, etc. Compare world language, speech articulation, or reading fluency at two points during the year. Challenge your Shakespeare students to record a soliloquy. Write and record a poem for Father’s or Mother’s Day (or other special events) and send the URL as a gift to that special person. If you have gifted students who lean toward the dramatic, this tool is simple enough for them to create dramatic mini-casts without needing any additional tools.

KidLit TV Radio features podcast editions of KidsLit TV shows featuring authors and illustrators participating in book talks. If your district blocks YouTube, the book trailer videos may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

Take advantage of the many features of this site to educate parents on literacy and motivate students to enjoy reading. Share podcasts and book trailers on your class website to recommend books your students may enjoy. Use the podcasts as an example, then have cooperative learning groups create podcasts as book talks for books they enjoy. Carrd is a simple to use, one-page website creator. Think of it as similar to an online business card. Begin by choosing from available templates or start with a blank page. A quick page of instructions provides an overview of tools available to use, including adding images, links to social media accounts, tables, and more. When complete, save and publish to your unique carrd.co URL. <b>Please check out the templates and published wording used. It may be inappropriate for your students.</b>

In the Classroom

Use this site for students to post simple projects such as stories, poems, and art projects. For easy access, collect a master list of links to student pages on your classroom website, wiki, blog, or create an interactive Google doc or form for collecting these. If students are creating pages, be sure to check with your district’s policy on publishing student work. Each website created has a private URL. Students can use this tool at home for presentations and email you the URL for their completed work. Compile the presentation URLs on your class blog or wiki, or a Google doc so all students have access. Integrate all subjects into Carrd. The simplicity of this site would make it an easy tool for younger students to create eportfolios with links to and explanations of their various projects located elsewhere on the web.

How It Works

BAM takes the notion of "fitness made simple" to a new level while making fitness, safety, and disease prevention engaging for kids. The Centers for Disease Control provides a wealth of colorful, visual, and interactive resources for children looking to maintain healthy, fit lifestyles. Sharing information on diseases, food, nutrition, physical activity, safety, and the changing body and mind through children’s lingo, articles, and interactives. Access all interactives through the left-hand navigational menu, making it easy for kids to find information. A prominent search box in the upper right-hand corner returns links to articles in the whole CDC site, not just BAM. A teachers’ corner provides ideas for integrating these activities into the classroom. <b>Because of some of the mature or disturbing nature of the information, e.g. deadly diseases, be sure to preview materials.</b>

In the Classroom

BAM is packed with interesting content and engaging activities. Use BAM with the whole class to teach a particular health or science topic using an interactive whiteboard or projector. Small groups and individual students can browse through the sections and play the interactives. Assign specific areas for students to complete at school or home as part of blended or flipped classrooms. Many downloadable handouts are available for classrooms with limited tech.

Teaching London Computing offers a large variety of resources for computer skills teachers. Download their latest magazine with stories about the most recent research, classroom activities, and more. Be sure to check out the classroom activities for primary and secondary school students. Most don’t need any additional materials other than resources linked to the activity. Other areas on the site include magic and computational thinking activities and videos of workshop presentations. The site was created in the UK, so some of the pronunciations and spellings may differ from those in American English.

In the Classroom

Take advantage of the free activities and resources on the site to promote computer skills and problem solving in the classroom. Choose activities from the site to include during your school’s math fair (or hold your own class math fair). Share a link to activities on your class website and encourage students to complete them and share with the class. Have students create an annotated image of their activity including text boxes, related links, and video using a tool such as Thinglink, <a href="/single.cfm?id=13216">reviewed here</a>.
