Who’s Who in Iraq

— BBC

8-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/2174293.stm Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:48 share

How It Works

This BBC site begins by admitting that Saddam Hussein is really the only "who" in Iraq, but it goes on to identify some of the other leading figures in a regime known for rapid personnel shifts. Older students may find this one useful as a way of putting faces to some of the names that are certain to be in the news in the days and weeks ahead.

In the Classroom

Although this site is a few years out of date, it still has some pretty good information as to how Hussein came to power as well as the political make-up of his regime before it toppled. Introduce this site on the interactive whiteboard before allowing students to read the information in cooperative learning groups. Use this site as the basis of a biography of Saddam Hussein, before allowing students to explore other avenues in their groups. Have cooperative learning groups create online books of their biographies using a tool such as Bookemon, reviewed here. This is a great activator to a lesson on unit on the War in Iraq as well as the role of the UN in international conflicts. This could easily benefit a cultural geography, US history or government class.

End Game - Ethics and Values in America

— PBS NewsHour

8-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices https://www.pbs.org/newshour/tag/end-game Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:48 share

How It Works

PBS tackles greed, honesty, and the gray areas that separate vice from virtue in this series on America’s ethics. While many viewers will think about the business implications of the series, the producers put the focus at a more personal level. Depending on your local situation, this site could be useful in business, guidance, or similar applications - or simply as a homeroom discussion starter for older students.

How It Works

This companion site from the PBS American Experience series offers a profile of John Wesley Powell’s first exploration of the Grand Canyon. While the teacher’s section is closely linked to the film itself, the site offers interactive maps, biographies, and background information on the discovery of one of America’s natural wonders.

In the Classroom

Try this one as a "compare and contrast" with Lewis and Clark’s expedition or today’s adventurers.

How It Works

The folks at Walden.org offer this collection of Thoreau’s writings (full texts), photos of the areas through which he traveled, and background on the author’s life and times. There’s great content for an author study in this one, though we cannot comment on the quality of the literary criticism.

How It Works

While West Nile isn’t likely to be a specific curriculum element anytime soon, the Centers for Disease Control’s page about West Nile offers good content showing how public health officials monitor and respond to the emergence of new infectious diseases. Try this one in a current events discussion, asking the question, "How big a problem might this actually be?"

Best of History Web Sites

How It Works

Maybe there really can be "too much of a good thing." This site is an immense catalog of resources (ie. other websites, lessons plans, content) for social studies teachers. Due to the sheer volume of material, it would be wise for teachers to have a clear idea of what they are looking for before opening up the site. Casual "grazing" here might easily lead to a becoming lost on the web.

In the Classroom

Save this site as a favorite on your classroom desktop and use it as a reference for virtually everything! It’s amazing how many resources they have managed to find - incredibly more helpful than a Google search would have been.

This section of the Avalon Project’s extensive collection of documents in American law, history, and diplomacy deals with the African American experience. It consists of a selection from each of the following: Martin Luther King, Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, W.E.B. DuBois, and Booker T. Washington. This is a great source for teachers writing document-based questions.
