Just War – The Carter Center’s Case

— The Carter Center

8-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://www.cartercenter.org/news/documents/doc1249.html Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:48 share

How It Works

The concept of “a just war” has been debated for decades as a logical way to establish whether the use of force in a specific situation carries any moral weight. This page from the Carter Center reprints an Op-Ed article by former president Jimmy Carter in which he asserts that current operations in Iraq fail the “just war” test on several grounds. Lots of interesting discussion possibilities with this one.

How It Works

Developed at Cornell University, this site offers a framework to help high school students conduct environmental science research and participate in communities of fellow student scientists. There are research protocols and discussion groups for a number of topics, as well as links to newly published text materials. The web content, however, seems to stand independently of the print materials. Secondary science, biology, and earth science teachers will find this one interesting.

How Gas Prices Work

How It Works

While not specifically written for students, this introduction to the supply and demand for petroleum is a real world example of the numerous factors that can affect pump prices and make a fill-up more expensive. Secondary economics classes will have fun with this one.

In the Classroom

Assign this reading before a class discussion on the economics of gas prices. The article itself may be over the heads of some lower achieving reading students, so be sure to spend a few minutes before the discussion allowing cooperative learning groups to discuss what they read before the discussion. This would be great for an economics or government class discussion the impact of globalization on natural resources.

Napoleon Series

How It Works

This is a privately produced, web-only resource about Napoleon, the French Revolution, and related historical topics. While the content is extensive and well-written, there is no biographical information on the authors. While we assume the facts are presented accurately, teachers may want to proceed cautiously in other areas.

In the Classroom

Use this site as a resource for students working on a research project or paper on Napoleon Bonaparte. Facing History

How It Works

This one is different; it’s a site built around exposing students to issues in history that have tested ethical and behavioral boundaries. Focusing on topics like anti-Semitism, eugenics, and genocide, the content requires students to think about the moral, political, and practical effects of actions by individuals and nations. The structure varies by subject area, and there is a combination of free and "registration required" areas. Secondary history and social sciences teachers will want to browse this one thoroughly.

In the Classroom

Take advantage of the free lesson and plans and classroom activities offered on this web page. Simply go to the "educator resources" section and teachers can search for materials by theme, time period or sequence.
