Metric Mania Lesson Plans

— The Science Spot

4-8 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://www.sciencespot.net/Pages/classmetric.html Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:49 share

How It Works

This straightforward, simple site contains lessons on length, density, mass, volume, and conversions that include PowerPoint lessons, students activity worksheets, and more. PowerPoints must be downloaded to your computer (assuming you have PowerPoint software), and most other activities are in PDF form. There is a short explanation of each lesson and lab activity included before going to the link to download information. Most activities are geared toward middle high students and have been chosen to help maintain interest. Be sure to check out the gummy bear lab (incorporates metric measurements when a gummy bear is soaked in water overnight), mystery canisters (float and sink), and the Metric Mania card game. Many links to other metric activities are also included in the site.

In the Classroom

Introduce and present lessons on your interactive whiteboard using the PowerPoints provided and the accompanying student worksheets. Use these ready to go lessons to "spruce up" your metric lessons. Ask students to design their own metric measurement lab using ordinary items from around their home. Then have the class try some and record the results on a class wiki.

Ask, Listen, Learn

— Century Council

4-8 0 favorites 0 promising practices https://asklistenlearn.org/ Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:49 share

How It Works

The site uses teen role models to show students how to eat nutritious foods, exercise, participate in sports, etc. in order to stay healthy. This site encourages preteens and young teems to stay active, achieve academically, and involve themselves in community projects. You can become a member of the Ask, Listen, Learn team with a simple registration (a parent’s email address is required). The site uses those who’ve registered as their "superstars," those whose stories and life habits appear on the pages. The motto for the activities on these pages is "Say yes to a healthy lifestyle, and no to underage drinking." The site includes the "Ecochallenge" which helps students become more aware of their environment. The site was originally designed to help combat underage drinking and drunk driving. However, there are many other topics here to explore.

In the Classroom

Have your students create an online photo essay about themselves, modeling the project on Lolo’s page which emphasizes the whole person: one’s body, spirit, emotional well-being, community participation, etc. Use a tool such as Web Poster Wizard (<a href="/single.cfm?id=7332">reviewed here</a>) or PicLits (<a href="/single.cfm?id=9822">reviewed here</a>), or use an online poster creator, such as Padlet (<a href="/single.cfm?id=10007">reviewed here</a>). Have students make checklists for themselves following the criteria they notice in the other stories at this site. rn<br><br>rnBe sure to include this link on your class website as parents may be interested in exploring this site.

Middle School Chemistry

— American Chemical Society

4-8 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://www.middleschoolchemistry.com/lessonplans/ Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:49 share

How It Works

"Big ideas about the very small," does not do this lesson plan center for middle level chemistry justice. Not only are there lessons plans and activity sheets that are able to be downloaded, there are also laboratory experiments and other smaller hands on activities that correspond to the lessons. Last but not least, there are related, FREE, online multimedia animations all packaged together.

In the Classroom

Pick a lesson plan that fits with your curriculum and try it out with your students in grades six through eight. The animations are wonderful for showing the particles that make up larger objects. This is always hard for middle level students to understand and these lesson plans make the explanation and instruction about these complex concepts that much easier.

Trig Without Tears

8-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://oakroadsystems.com/twt/ Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:49 share

How It Works

This site offers explanations for trigonometric functions and identifies the most important formulas as a basis for learning and understanding trigonometry. The concept is that student learning will increase with understanding of basic concepts instead of memorizing all formulas by rote without comprehension of meaning. Although a little dry and void of many illustrations, the site may be helpful for studying and learning basis trigonometric concepts. There is a printable version of the site which can be used for student journals or notebooks.

In the Classroom

Use copies of the printable version of the site with students to use in class for highlighting important information. Use small portions of the printable information to reinforce new concepts taught in class or when reviewing for assessments. Read portions of the site in class with your students and have them create their own explanation of concepts.

Cabot’s Farm Families

— Cabot Cheese

2-8 0 favorites 0 promising practices https://www.cabotcheese.coop/our-farm-families/ Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:49 share

How It Works

This site tells the story of the farm families that produce milk for a large cheese-making enterprise. Select a dot within one of the states on the map (New York, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, or Massachusetts) and read the story of the family who lives at that location. Stories are text only, but they do have clear photographs of each family. You can then select another story by a family in the same state or go back to the original map and select another family’s story anywhere. As you roll your mouse over the dot, the name of the family and the community where they live pop up. Ignore the advertising; the site content is worth it.

In the Classroom

Have students create similar photo essays of farmers or members of any other profession in your state, using this as a model and example. Have students create a multimedia presentation, adding audio, using Thinglink, <a href="/single.cfm?id=13216">reviewed here</a>. This site allows you to narrate a picture. Challenge students to find (legally permitted to be reproduced) or even take a photo.
