Valentine’s Day

— A&E Entertainment

6-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://www.history.com/topics/valentines-day Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:49 share

How It Works

The History Channel provides an interesting summary of the various legends of Valentine’s Day from several cultures throughout the world. The information provided dates back to before the Middle Ages and touches upon the ideas of some pagan traditions as well as Roman and Christian theories. This site includes many related articles and videos. NOTE: There are also very factual videos about "the science of love," "kissing," etc. so middle level teachers may want to be sure their students are not too silly/immature to catch sight of these television specials. There are some minor advertisements at this site.

In the Classroom

Reference the information on this website to use with a lesson on holidays or various history units. Assign speculated theories listed within the text to students and have them work in small groups to expand upon the information. Have them present their information to the class in a jigsaw format. Students could use the Valentine’s Day information to compare and contrast with other holidays having similar historical connections such as Easter and May Day. Have cooperative learning groups compare the two holidays using a site such as, Interactive Two Circle Venn Diagram (<a href="/single.cfm?id=9413">reviewed here</a>).

New York Science Teacher - Movie Sheets

— Christopher Sheehan

6-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://moviesheets.com/site/science-movie-sheets.php Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:49 share

How It Works

The New York Science Teacher Movie Sheet page offers fast help for turning good movies into academic endeavors. How many times do we find a regular movie that we would like to use for science class but do not have the time to create a good guide or question sheet for it? This is a good solution. Movie sheets, all submitted by teachers, are searchable by subject content and a few are searchable by series. The guides are printable, and they make a great "in-a-pinch" solution.

In the Classroom

These printable movie worksheets are a great way to supplement a video. Try using them to amp up the educational punch of everyday movies or to ask different questions about science videos you may already have. Challenge students to create their own worksheets to accompany a video. Have cooperative learning groups view a video together (while other groups view other videos) and then create an online worksheet using Google Docs, <a href="/single.cfm?id=8030">reviewed here</a>. Use the online worksheets with the other various groups as they view all of the videos. If you find a movie/video title that sounds good based on the activity sheets here, search for it on YouTube.

Physics To Go

— APS, AAPT, and NSF-NSDL

6-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://www.physicstogo.org/ Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:49 share

How It Works

Physics To Go is an online, biweekly magazine with great ideas for physics related teaching, experiments, and pictures. The site is easy to navigate and is formatted much like a page out of a newspaper. Archives are accessible through issue and topic organization, subjects under browse, and are fully searchable within the site. Many additional links for more research are available. This could prove to be indispensable for the high school physical science and physics teachers.

In the Classroom

Use this site to encourage your students to read about science outside of the classroom. Share the link on your website or class wiki. Start by assigning an article to students and have them highlight and annotate important information and questions they have and discuss it in class or on a blog. Have students use a digital tool like Hypothesis, <a href="/single.cfm?id=17417">reviewed here</a>, for highlighting and annotating. If you are beginning the process of integrating technology, have students create blogs sharing their learning and understanding using Weebly, <a href="/single.cfm?id=12342">reviewed here</a>. Or, if you are teaching a unit on something specific, such as Earthquakes, once students have learned essential vocabulary, have them read the issue and follow the links on the page. Have students discuss in class what they have learned. Then, have small groups create "Top Five Facts" to summarize what they have learned. Challenge students to create a talking avatar using a photo or other image (legally permitted to be reproduced). The avatars can be used to explain the "Top Five Facts" the group wishes to share with the class. Use a site such as Blabberize, <a href="/single.cfm?id=10380">reviewed here</a>. Reading teachers can also use the articles on this site for reading comprehension practice with nonfiction selections.

3-6 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://www.jamit.com.au/welcome.html Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:49 share

How It Works

Jamit Fractions is a series of 10 fraction lessons. Each lesson is followed by an interactive game that may not be supported on all devices due to it requiring JAVA. A culminating test shows students how much they have learned.

In the Classroom

Use this great fraction website to review fractions by having students go through the lessons and interactives individually or with a partner. This would also make for an excellent review prior to a fraction test. Be sure to list this link on your class website during a unit on fractions.

Newsvine

— Newsvine

6-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://www.newsvine.com/ Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:49 share

How It Works

For those of us just venturing into Web 2.0, it’s sometimes hard to know how to categorize a site: is it a social networking site? Is it a news site? Newsvine is a "bottom up" news aggregator site. Those who read news stories anywhere else on the web are encouraged to upload them to Newsvine. The stories that are uploaded most often are the ones that display most prominently in the Newsvine feed. You can either read Newsvine as a way of getting some quick snapshots of the news (and the Newsvine "live" feed goes by so fast you can hardly keep up with it!), or you can join Newsvine as a member and write your own blog/column about the news. The "leaderboard" link takes you to the most popular writers. There is a "Code of Honor" that writers and users are asked to follow which prohibits hate speech and advertising, but there is no agreement about whether the columns are "kid friendly" or not, so preview this carefully before you decide whether your students should be accessing this site.

In the Classroom

For students who are interested in current events, Newsvine is a good source of up-to-the-minute stories from across the web, all viewpoints, and all perspectives. If it seems appropriate for your students, it could be one of your favorites that students can access during self-directed time, or when they are looking to extend a lesson with current information. There is advertising, but it’s not too intrusive. Use this site as one of several current event options when you ask students to find real world connections to curriculum topics.

How It Works

Decimal Challenge is a guessing game where students try to identify a decimal. The interactive tells you whether your guess is too high or too low. Students try to guess the decimal in the fewest amount of tries.

In the Classroom

A great interactive to use with students who need a little extra practice with decimal number sense. Use on an interactive whiteboard or projector to discuss strategies and then let students play independently or with a partner. Students would enjoy competing against each other during whole class time.

How It Works

Find actual anatomy and physiology images of the human body. Search through the images categorized by system. There are videos that range in length and topic (split pelvis, gastrointestinal track, and several others). Some videos are only 5-7 minutes while others are nearly 30 minutes. Warning: These are graphic displays of human cadavers used for medical training purposes. You will want to preview videos before you share with middle school students. Check whether your school has any policies about obtaining parent permission before sharing graphic images.

In the Classroom

Identify how structure is related to function through discussing how different structures are related to their functions and how they compare with a other organisms. Compare images from your own class discussions to identify the similarities and differences among organisms. Consider sharing (appropriate) videos on your interactive whiteboards or projectors.

How It Works

Find terrific resources for chemistry and biology classes at this informational site. You’ll find PowerPoints, procedures for labs, and general notes. This site was originally designed to be one teacher’s online classroom spot. However, the resources are very helpful in teaching chemistry, biology, and science in general, and this teacher is willing to share.

In the Classroom

Use the printables in your classroom when students do not have easy access to the internet. Try something more adventurous by showing a chemistry video on your interactive whiteboard. To use this site even further, have students try out a virtual lab tool as an alternative to a hands on lab assignment. Assign groups to different (specific) topics and challenge the groups to present their lab and results by creating a multimedia presentation using one of the many TeachersFirst Edge tools <a href="/content/edge.cfm?c=16">reviewed here</a>. Make this link available as an alternate way to look at concepts when students are "stuck" or confused.
