— Suriya Creations

K-3 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://animalexploration.tripod.com/animalexploration.html Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:48 share

How It Works

This nicely organized visual site about animals is perfect for independent student research at the elementary level. Students can select an animal by type, read through the kid-friendly text to learn more about it, and browse through some great photographs. Animal topics include birds, fish, reptiles, spiders and insects, amphibians, and mammals. The site also includes a search feature (scroll to the bottom of the home page) and games, puzzles, and other activities. Although all reference links are active, some of the games and puzzle links are no longer working. This site does include some small advertisements.

In the Classroom

Use this site for individual research projects on a variety of animals. Share the link in your class newsletter or on your class website for students to access at home.

How It Works

This article, published in the George Lucas Foundation’s Edutopia online journal, argues that the rigid time schedules found in most schools work to the detriment of both teachers and their students. It argues for a reexamination of some of the practices common in most schools, and suggests the consequences of continuing with current patterns.

How It Works

This clever lesson plan helps students identify adjectives and apply what they’ve learned in a hands-on creative activity. After a class reading of Ed Emberley’s award winning Go Away Big Green Monster, students are asked to classify adjectives according to emotion or appearance, choose the one they like best, and create a paper-sculpture monster that illustrates the descriptive word they have selected. Aligned to National Standards.
