How It Works

Practice basic skills in recognizing colors, shapes, numbers, upper/lower case letters, and simple vocabulary words with this interactive, multimedia site. Excellent for early elementary, ESL, and beginning foreign language students. Headphones required. Available in Spanish, German, and French. This site requires FLASH. In the Classroom

Use this site as a learning center or station for younger ELL students needing help letter recognition and writing. Have students work in pairs, allowing higher achieving students to help their peers. How It Works

Practice time-telling skills with this Concentration-style game. Match the visual analog clock with its numeric equivalent. A nice site for independent practice in the computer lab or at a station in your classroom. Younger students would benefit from using this site in a full-class activity with an interactive white board.

In the Classroom

This site is excellent for enrichment. Include it on your teacher web page for students to access both in and out of class. Teachers can also use the site as a learning center or station, and allow students to work on it individually. This site is a great way to practice time-telling and memory skills. Definitely an excellent way to review at the conclusion of a time unit!

This impressive collection of free printable worksheets, flashcards, puzzles, and lesson plans offers ESL teachers at all levels so many options for teaching vocabulary, conversational skills, "survival" English, and culture. You may have to poke around a bit to find what you need, but this is definitely a resource to bookmark.

In the Classroom

Try the "Hypothetically speaking" game as a way to teach students how and when to speak hypothetically in a fun, humorous way. Put students in cooperative learning groups that are mixed in levels of English comprehension. Introduce the game by example with a select student before allowing cooperative learning groups to complete it themselves.
