More story beginners are added frequently to the site, and students or teachers may submit a student story created with a Meddybemp starter. Students whose stories get published receive a free T-shirt and online publication! Selected students become Young Writers Workshop Published Authors!

How It Works

For teachers who want to learn more about webquests, this is the original from Bernie Dodge at San Diego State. He and Tom March "invented" the webquest. The term has come to be used in many ways, but this is the "real" thing. With academic articles, complete training materials, exercises, information on design, suggestions for adapting existing webquests, etc., this is a complete resource. The site also contains links to online workshops for those who prefer instruction with feedback. Teachers First also has a step-by-step tutorial on making a web-based activity, <a href="http://www.teachersfirst.com/summer/webquest/quest-a.shtml">Webquest 101</a>.

How It Works

A series of resources and web information assist parents with helping children develop pre-literacy and other developmental skills. Click on Early Language &amp; Literacy to find out how to use books and stories to help children prepare for school-age tasks and reading. Other topics include Brain Development, Health &amp; Nutrition, Social &amp; Emotional Development, and several others. Though the information and handouts seem to be for much younger children, they will also be helpful for parents new to English and the American school system.

In the Classroom

Print out these handouts and copy when meeting pre-kindergarten parents for the first pre-registration meeting. List this site on your class website. Use with international parents whose cultures might not include using books and America’s free public libraries. Encourage international parents to tell stories from their cultures and families to help children succeed in school.

This compilation site describes websites that use music to teach language skills. Not only useful for limited English speakers, this site offers ideas for elementary teachers, as well, with specific songs and suggestions for including music as part of a regular lesson. You will find that addressing musical/rhythmic intelligence may draw in students who otherwise struggle. And all of them will find the different approach a refreshing change.

This one would work well on an interactive whiteboard or as a center for elementary children. Don’t forget to turn up the sound (and attach speakers, if needed) to hear the songs.

Take a multi-cultural approach to Day of the Dead celebrations by trying some of these hands-on activities and crafts from Mexico. These would work well as part of a fall festival, multicultural days, or in a Spanish class. The activities include Making a Paper Marigold, a recipe for Bread of the Dead, art projects, and sugar skulls and papier mache floral skulls.

Literature for Children: A Digital Library

How It Works

Though this site is now archived, the links and information are still good. This is a true on-line digital library, with information about the books searched presented in a library-type (MARC) format; items include title, author, keyword, subjects, notes, content vocabulary etc. Links to the digitized texts are offered in both pdf and jpeg form at the bottom of the page. The collection covers children’s literature from 1850 to 1950 and more, only those items found in the Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature at the University of Florida. While not a comprehensive library in the sense of offering the classics of children’s literature, the approach is instructional and the offerings well presented. Items are searchable by keyword, author, and title.

In the Classroom

If you know of an older piece of children’s lit that is out of print, this is a way to find the text to read to your children. You can also search by subject to find stories on a certain topic. Why not use some of these texts to highlight parts of speech or main ideas of paragraphs on an interactive whiteboard?
