How It Works

This site provides quizzes, interactives, and extra help for young learners. Students can choose from over 300 grammar quizzes. Though originally meant for ESL/ELL learners, this site is appropriate for all learners. The quizzes provide instant feedback and the correct answer, if an incorrect answer is provided.

In the Classroom

Use this site on a projector or interactive whiteboard as a fun way to introduce students to different types of grammar. In addition, use this as a way to discuss and informally assess prior knowledge as you start your study of a particular grammar topic. Post this on your class webpage for students to use at home or use it in the lab or classroom when students finish an assignment early. If you want to view only easy quizzes you may choose to do so.

How It Works

This site provides lessons with hands-on math using a Mobius strip (or band). Though the site is "plain vanilla," this topic always fascinates students. Directions are included for creating the strips along with a link to printable blackline masters to use. A simple, mathematically important, and wonderfully entertaining two-dimensional object, also known as the Mobius strip, that has only one surface and one edge and is therefore of great interest in topology. It is used in classrooms to develop understanding of surfaces and create mystery. Lessons build upon each other and give stopping points for each grade level. Pictures would have been helpful to demonstrate the activities; however, the site is still useful with providing lessons using the bands. In the Classroom

During the lessons, take digital pictures of the procedures for creating and working with the Mobius bands. Older students can search for examples of Mobius bands used in the real world and create a classroom display.

How It Works

This site has lots of interactives for young children to explore. Interactives cover several different subject areas and include lots of fun sounds and graphics. Simply click the arrows to scroll through the games. Be aware: if you click "Home" you will be taken to the main page for Kids CBC, not the specific area for primary grades only. So you may want to use the back arrow to return, or mark this as a Favorite for easy return.

In the Classroom

These interactives will be a nice addition to any preschool, kindergarten, or first grade classroom. The interactive, Blooming Bubbles, will help your students count while they learn about what is needed to grow a garden. In "Busytown," young children can learn about the different parts of a town. Use the interactives on a whiteboard or in a computer lab. These are also good to use for center work. Be sure to turn up speakers to hear audio for whole class use or use headphones if using this site at a center. Why not list this link on your class website for families to explore at home.

How It Works

This site provides practice in math facts with a twist - create your own goal for speed in completing facts. Upon achieving your goal, a printable certificate is available. Practice is provided in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. There is also a choice of choosing only certain digits to work with. Specific directions are provided on the site (there are three steps of "choosing" before you hit START.)

In the Classroom

Individualize the game for students to practice skills needed. For example, if a student is having trouble with multiples of 7 choose to practice those facts only while decreasing the time allowed for completion. Create a link on your classroom computers to use as a center for fact practice. Provide this link on your classroom website or blog for use at home.

How It Works

Use this very simple site to create a test that’s accessible on the Internet. Create an automatically graded test easily and for free! You can even include audio and video if you have an HTML embed code. Registration is not required to use or to take the created tests. Simply click "Create a test," enter the test name, and create a password. Note: Be sure to remember the password somewhere because it is not possible to recover it. Read the directions on the Test Control Panel to adjust settings, add questions, and publish the test. Bookmark the URL of the finished test you make so you can find it later. After publishing, copy and paste the URL of the test into a wiki, blog, or site, for student access. View reports when students are done with the test.

In the Classroom

Skills required: Be sure to remember the password for your tests, as well as the unique URL. It would be wise to copy/paste them into a document you keep somewhere for reference. Users are unable to access the tests without the URL. Be sure to not share this ahead of time. Items in Testmoz are not made public.rn

rnUse where automatically graded tests are required, such as for formative assessments to check student understanding. Use as a "ticket out the door" to see what students know at the end of class. Be sure that this is the medium you want to use for testing. Be flexible with students who find it difficult to take online testing. Entering all the material ahead of time can be time consuming, so this may not be the best format for long tests. Use this quiz application to create study quizzes for review for students to complete as homework (or during class time). Have students rotate to create daily check quizzes for their peers (earning a grade for test-creation). Learning support students and others who need a little extra review might like to make quizzes to challenge each other or themselves. Have students who are preparing to give oral presentations in any subject prepare a short Testmoz for their peers to take at the end.

How It Works

At The National Writing Project(NWP)you will find all sorts of ideas, advice, and resources to help you help your students to become better writers. This is a jewel of a website that is dedicated to promoting writing and teachers who are working to help students become successful writers and learners. This reviewer read an article about teachers using photos as prompts for writing. Within the article were several resources and ideas that can be used immediately. This is a massive site with lots of information. Take your time and go through it. You do not have to join the site to read or search for articles and resources. However, if you do join, you’ll have the option to sign up for events, participate in discussion forums, receive E-Voice, the NWP’s bi-monthly email newsletter that provides news updates, links to articles of interest to writing teachers, and other information about the NWP community.

In the Classroom

Every time you visit the NWP site you’ll learn something new or find a new idea or resource. For instance, did you know that the second annual National Day on Writing is October 20, 2010? At the NWP site you’ll find lots of ideas and resources for contributing to the National Day on Writing. Since this site updates articles and resources fairly often it would be best to bookmark your favorites using a social bookmarking tool such as Diigo <a href="/single.cfm?id=11373">reviewed here</a>. Using a tool like Diigo will also allow you to share sites and resources with other teachers and students, too.rnrnrn
