How It Works

Select and Speak (formerly (Speakit) is an easy to install, free program that converts written text on web pages into spoken words within the Chrome web browser. At the time of this review, it works exclusively on Google Chrome. You can use this extension in many different languages. All you do is highlight the text, and it reads it aloud. The tool works only on website text, not documents, etc. This extension uses text to speech service and might not be accessible to those whose computers prevent download/installation of software. There are some errors in the program they are still fixing.

In the Classroom

Use Select and Speak as your teacher’s helper. Be sure to test it out on classroom computers and devices before using it with students. During research or computer explorations, allow students to use this read aloud feature. Honor the students who heavily rely on hearing as their preferred form of comprehending material. In lower grades, research on computers now becomes an easier task. This extension is perfect for ESL/ELL or learning support students to help with vocabulary development, comprehension, fluency, and repetitions.

In the Classroom

Promote early literacy in a new way. Use this site on your projector or interactive whiteboard. Have students view the activities on laptops. (Don’t forget the headsets.) Create a learning center that is sure to keep students intrigued. Use this site to promote early phonemic awareness in a colorful and engaging way. While teaching about Mother Goose rhymes in class, be sure to list this site in your class newsletter or on your class website for students to revisit the classics at home. You would be surprised how many parents do not even know these rhymes!

How It Works

TuLyn Video Clips on YouTube provides over 2000 math video tutorial clips for grades 1 through 12. Available items can be viewed by searching by topic, grade level, or school level. After choosing a topic there is a short explanation, definitions, and links to available resources by format. Choices include video tutorials, worksheets, word problems, discussions, and books. All worksheets are in PDF format for easy saving and printing. <i>Be aware, this site has many advertisements. You may want to peruse the site and get the video (or other activity) prepared ahead of time, to avoid the advertisements.</i>

In the Classroom

Use this site as a resource for word problems or worksheets to support existing units. Show videos on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) as a supplement to classroom activities. Create a link to the site on classroom computers to be used as a center for students to view videos. You may want to have the exact URL already prepared/loaded on the computer, to avoid the advertisements. Share this site with students and parents through your classroom newsletter or website as a resource for additional practice with curriculum.

How It Works

This site offers practice in building fluency with basic math facts. Registration is required; however, it is free. You simply create a list of students in your classroom and each student can work at their own progress. Progress reports are provided, and there is also a printable that can be sent home with information for students to practice at home. The goal within all activities is for students to provide answers within 3 seconds. If a problem isn’t answered within 10 seconds the answer will appear for the student to type in. If it is answered within 3-10 seconds the student will receive a smiley face. If it is answered correctly within 3 seconds the student receives a check mark within that box. The classroom portion is also set up to be used on shared computers within the classroom. The first student chooses their name, inputs their pin number and completes the activity then the next name on the list appears for the following student to work at the computer. There is an option to skip over students who are absent or busy. Upon completion, a report will be prepared for the teacher.

In the Classroom

Display the introductory video on your interactive whiteboard to introduce students to the site and how to login and complete activities. Share information on the site with parents for students to practice at home. Create a link on classroom and lab computers for student use.

Star reporters, ready, get set, and you are off to an investigation for your latest breaking news article. This interactive site offers graphics as well as written and spoken words to highlight all the information. While you navigate through the site, you visit several sources, and listen to the investigations. You can navigate to choose the sources and to take the information into a draft. After visiting various sources, you submit your news article to rate and get an assessment. To end your assignment, your editor rates your story and adds helpful hints to improve your writing.rn<br><br>rnAt the time of this review, the "Be a Correspondent" link was not working.

In the Classroom

Use this site as an introduction to news articles. Try several versions to see the different types of stories that result. Now shift your news article skills to your choice of topic. How It Works

This site offers practice with math and challenging problems for all grade levels. If you teach math to grades 1-12, this site is a MUST SEE. It contains a graduated set of over 1,000 problems starting from very easy and working up to very difficult levels. Each problem contains a short description and an image to help visualize the problem. Problems adapt to the skill of the person answering problems, grade levels cannot be increased until 5 correct problems in a row have been solved. The tests concentrate on understanding, spatial reasoning, and problem solving rather than math rules and theorems.

All activities take place in an under the sea environment with included help and vocabulary support. <i>Please note that this site is from Canada, so the money activity uses Canadian currency.</i>

In the Classroom

Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector with the sound turned up. Play the introduction to orient your students. Have students try out this site on individual computers, or as a learning center (maybe on the IWB). For students that are having trouble with math vocabulary, use the provided glossary for explanations of common math terms. Parent/teacher information is available for each of the lessons. Most of the activities have different levels so activities can be differentiated for students.
