Romantic Circles

How It Works

This very useful site provides information on Romantic-period literature and culture. Its resources continue to expand. An interesting feature is the Villa Diodati, a five -room MOOspace. Named for the house rented by Lord Byron and the Shelleys in the summer of 1816, the space provides for panel discussions and conversations. The Romantic Circles site already provides conferences, publications, scholarly resources, reviews and electronic editions, with more features on the way.

Though it is no longer actively maintained, this site includes some entertaining ways to hook students on Shakespeare, such as Today in Shakespeare History, a daily calendar with a page of quotes from Shakespeare for every day of the year. On March 15, read the famous lines from Julius Caesar! Use the magnetic poetry page to find new ways to put Elizabethan English words into original poems on your computer screen.

In the Classroom

Save this site as a favorite and use it as a learning center or station - in particular, the Poetry Machine during a unit on writing poetry. A very creative and fun way to help students get their creative juices flowing. A great resource for a Language Arts and Literature classroom.

Use the texts from these sites as samples for grammar study, literature, and more. Since the works are in the public domain, you may copy/paste the text into files to print, for use on an interactive whiteboard, or as the text portion of multimedia projects. rn<br><br>rnSome ideas: Students can use these digital texts and add digital photographs, for example, for creative projects using poetry and images on a specific theme. Students could also collect examples of different literary devices and put them into a PowerPoint show with images or explanations.

This webquest gives high schoolers a tall order: come up with a workable renewable energy policy to work with a business. The quest offers leads to information on renewable resources and suggestions on areas in which these resources can be economically viable. The rest is up to your students. This one has lots of possibilities.

For the sales pitch presentations, consider having students use Google Docs, <a href="/single.cfm?id=8030">reviewed here</a>, instead of Microsoft PowerPoint. This will make upload time faster and grading easier, as they can simply share them with your google account.
