Learn about food, feasting, and other historic culinary items on this site with these medieval and Renaissance European recipes. All recipes have been adapted for the 21st century kitchen. This site also has a link to their YouTube channel. If this content interests you, besure to check out the menu on the left for other cultures and times.

In the Classroom

If you and your students are studying the medieval and/or Renaissance period of time this is a nice addition to engage student interest. Think about having individuals, pairs, or small groups of students choose a recipe to create at home. Then ask them to photograph the steps in making the dish and the final product. Enhance learning by having students use the Free Online Photo Editor, <a href="/single.cfm?id=18341">reviewed here</a>, to label and put borders around the photos. Extend learning by having students put their photos into a class recipe book using Ourboox, <a href="/single.cfm?id=16998">reviewed here</a>.

How It Works

This site has a wealth if information about everything a person in medieval/renaissance Europe would have enjoyed for a meal, including recipes. The site not only has a trough of recipes, but also has articles and resources detailing the significance of certain foods, how they were prepared, and who would have ate them. A very interesting site for exploring one aspect of the Renaissance and Medieval Europe.

In the Classroom

This site would be fun for teachers with enough resources and students who were able to take a day and prepare some of these foods for a classroom activity during a unit on the Renaissance or Medieval Europe. Teachers can either prepare a recipe themselves, or perhaps have students make some as a voluntary assignment, or for extra credit!

How It Works

This site, created for eighth grade students, offers links to activities in math, science, social studies, language arts, creative arts, and a reference library. Some of the subject areas only offer one or two activities, while others offer several topics. The topics vary greatly and include measuring angles, multiplying decimals, the human body (skeleton, heart, muscles), vertebrates and invertebrates, the Civil War, the War of 1812, and some language arts topics (writing topic sentences, using figurative language, analogies, writing about cause and effect, and several others). Be aware: some of the language arts topics lead you to another educational site and are not as simple to use as in other subject areas. The language arts link is under construction and several are currently unavailable. rn<br> <br>rnAlthough some of the activities are not highly interactive (some are simple online quizzes), they are well done and could be very useful in the classroom. There are also interactive diagrams and more. Some of the pages do have advertisements, but they are not distractive. Some activities require Flash, but there are others that don’t.

In the Classroom

Check out the eclectic mix of activities available at this website. Share it with your students on an interactive whiteboard or projector. Use this site for enrichment, learning stations, or as a whole class activity, depending on the subject matter. List this site on your class website for students to use for additional practice at home.
