Virtual Chemistry

8-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://www.chem.ox.ac.uk/vrchemistry/ Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:48 share

How It Works

Oxford University’s online chemistry offerings include this collection of "virtual experiments" in a number of areas, along with a complete online "pre-university chemistry course." While the entire collection may be more than most secondary teachers can use, the individual components - with lots of animations and video - are well worth a look, especially if your laboratory resources are limited.

Universal Currency Converter

How It Works

While currency exchange rates aren’t part of every math curriculum, this site can illustrate both the changing relationships among currencies and the wide range of international currencies with which international traders must contend. Try this one as fodder for some interesting algebra word problems.

In the Classroom

This site would be great in a geography or World History classroom, helping students review for a final assessment. Have students "plan" a trip to some of the places/times studied in your class. Have them maintain a budget with their trip, and use this site to help students translate their financial dealings to have it all make sense. This is a great way to get students thinking about the mechanics of travel, as well as a great way to review the geography of the places being studied - both culturally and physically.

How It Works

Find yourself some serious puzzlers before heading off to solve the problems on this site maintained by an engineering honor society. While several of the problems at least appear to be solvable by mere mortals, others are clearly targeted to the pros. We offer these for secondary teachers who may be working with students interested in advanced math, logic, and physics. The site is drawn from a print publication, and answers are posted quarterly.

How It Works

Created and published at Cambridge University, PLUS is an online magazine about mathematics. While many of the topics are esoteric, the writing attempts to make the presentations – and math in general – appealing and interesting even to those who aren’t mathematicians. At this it does a surprisingly good job. This one’s worth a look, especially for teachers interested in novel ways of teaching math.

DNA Interactive

8-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://www.dnai.org/index.html Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:48 share

How It Works

This site offers secondary students an extensive exposure to genetics, DNA and gene sequencing, and the problems and procedures that have been tackled to advance current DNA science to its current state. This is a rich resource that could almost serve as a complete tutorial, but teachers will more likely want to use it as a reference tool to supplement classroom or textbook presentations. You’ll need strong readers to work through this one.

In the Classroom

Use the interactive timeline as a learning center. Have students tour the timeline, with the purposes of finding what they think are the 10 most important events in the history of DNA. Have students create a multimedia presentation of their top 10 events using UtellStory, <a href="/single.cfm?id=14414">reviewed here</a>. This site allows users to narrate a picture. Challenge students to find a photo (legally permitted to be reproduced), and then narrate their photos as if it is a news report. To find Creative Commons images for student projects (with credit, of course), try PikWizard, <a href="/single.cfm?id=18307">reviewed here</a>.
