Churchill Papers

— Cambridge University

8-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://www.chu.cam.ac.uk/archives/collections/churchill_papers/ Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:48 share

How It Works

Those interested in Sir Winston Churchill will find this site’s offerings more than ample. An online biography and chronology will probably be most helpful, but there are also links to various collections of Churchill’s papers, and also to several online features designed for use in British schools. Americans will likely find these materials most relevant to a unit on World War II.

In the Classroom

What a cool way to bring some personality to the characters that often seem too stoic to be human. Use the primary sources on this site during an introductory activity about the characters predominantly studied in WWII. Show students some of the materials over the interactive whiteboard or projector during a lecture on Churchill, Stalin and Truman.

Great Lakes Maritime History

How It Works

This one may be beyond the scope of all but the most interested secondary student, but its collection of archival books and records of great lakes shipping in the 19th and early 20th centuries offers an unusually detailed picture of that industry. Some of the most interesting elements are the period advertisements. History teachers may also find this one an interesting sidebar to a history of American and Canadian commerce.

This site would be appropriate for a student working on a research project concerning the beginnings of water transport. Post this site on your teacher web page to allow those students to access it both in and out of the classroom.

American Journeys

— Wisconsin Historical Society

8-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://www.americanjourneys.org/ Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:48 share

How It Works

The Wisconsin Historical Society offers this collection of first-hand accounts of historical events, from the early explorers through the settling of the United States. After a quirky search process, the site ultimately displays scanned images of venerable publications containing the material. While this approach is certainly historically accurate, it may be limiting for use with secondary students.

In the Classroom

Take advantage of the free lesson plans and classroom activities hosted on the "teachers" portion of this site! Teachers can also use this site to search for primary sources that can be utilized in their classroom during a unit on early American exploration.

How It Works

Secondary physics and astronomy teachers may want to take a look at NASA’s primer on cosmic rays, astrophysics, energy particles, and magnetic fields. The site offers lots of drill-down options providing additional detail. A surprisingly useful feature is an "in the news" section that offers current information about many of the topics.

How It Works

Created at Beloit College, this slightly quirky collection of Quicktime movies and applets illustrates aspects of global warming and climate change from the last ice age to the present. Additional text explains many of the concepts, but the site is primarily a visual tool.

How It Works

National Public Radio’s coverage of the legal and ethical issues surrounding "right to die" cases examines the rights of patients and the responsibilities of relatives, the state, and health care providers. Grappling with the, "Who decides?" question may be troubling for some students, but can be a thought-provoking process.

How It Works

This site is the work of a team of New Jersey high school teachers and professional archivists who set out to create a set of history modules using historical artifacts. While users will find more text than images, the lessons link to key themes of the American revolution, the Civil War, and other major curriculum areas, and there are plenty of "What do you think?" questions interspersed throughout the presentation.

How It Works

Secondary physics teachers who want to stretch their students’ understanding of the universe will welcome this site on string theory - a companion to the PBS NOVA program on the same topic. The most recent attempt to identify a single unifying force in the universe, string theory’s key premise is that there are additional dimensions beyond the four (including time) with which most of us are familiar.

8-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://www.americanradioworks.org/features/iraq/ Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:48 share

How It Works

A team that includes former National Public Radio correspondents has created an audio-based web site that examines the various political, military, social, and economic issues with which both Americans and Iraqis must cope in post-war Iraq. It is an impressionistic view, but interesting nonetheless.

In the Classroom

Use this site as a learning center or station during a unit on the Iraq war and the War on terror that has pervaded US foreign politics for the better half of a decade. Because there is a lot of information on this site, this activity would work best with a follow-along or guide. For help creating easy graphic organizers, we recommend using Graphic Organizer Maker, <a href="/single.cfm?id=7688">reviewed here</a>.
