How It Works

For those who just can’t wait for the next Harry Potter book, this site offers plenty of Harry Potter news, discussions, galleries with possible title pages and other illustrations, a page of avatar graphics, links to Potter movie trailers, and anything imaginable to do with the books and/or the movies. This is a consumer site, so it is a bit more "Hollywood" than "education," but there are portions that promote discussion, character analysis, and pure love of reading.

In the Classroom

Channel your students’ high levels of anticipation about the next HP book by encouraging them to participate in some of these online discussions, with parent permission, of course. Include the link on your teacher web page to accompany an independent reading or for author study.

Ms. Blume talks about her writing and directs students (and adults) to other reputable sites about writing tips, etc. It is also a safe place for kids to express their own views about her writing to her either through email or through her blogs.

Teaching about Japanese-American Internment

How It Works

ERIC was a government-sponsored clearinghouse for educational resources that has recently lost funding. This site maintains some of the files from the ERIC database, and in this case, focuses on resources relative to the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. It includes some very helpful suggestions for explaining this process to students and placing it in a larger context of civil rights, immigration, and the study of World War II.

In the Classroom

Teachers have to walk a fine line between helping students see history as it was experienced at the time, and showing them what we may have learned from those events. This site can assist with the difficulty of discussing the blatant racism of Japanese-American internment while acknowledging its presence in American history.

The Vietnam War

How It Works

A photo essay slide show covering the Vietnam War. There are also timelines, maps, and a brief discussion of the war in general.The focus of this site is its outstanding images, most which have accompanying text, explaining and setting the context.

In the Classroom

Because it is in a slide show format, this would be effective on a projector or interactive whiteboard. There is a soundtrack that accompanies the slide shows. Teachers should exercise caution, however, as some of the images might be upsetting or difficult for less mature students.

How It Works

Looking for a great resource site that offers visualizations of complex cellular activities? Use DNA Tube as your visual scientific resource. This non-profit scientific site provides video based studies, lectures, and seminars that are for more advanced and motivated students. Use the video-based explanations of a large variety of biological concepts to remove barriers of understanding from students. Click "watch" to see thumbnails of videos. Use the search bar at the top to find relevant videos. Use the Category tab to search among various categories such as lectures, experiments, ecology, genetics, and many others. Sign up with the site to be able to download videos after entering login information. Along the bottom of each video page, find thumbnails of related videos as well as related topics. Topics include various areas of science and math. This site does allow you to upload your own videos. Uploading videos requires registration.

In the Classroom

Find great videos to use as an introduction to a unit or to help clarify how a certain process occurs using these visualizations. Use videos on an interactive whiteboard or with a projector. Pause through the video to ask questions about what is happening in the process, explain processes, or have students be able to use appropriate vocabulary to explain. This site is excellent for enrichment. Include it on your class web page for students to access both in and out of class. Challenge students to create their own simple videos to help explain a science concept. Share the videos using using a tool such as SchoolTube <a href="/single.cfm?id=9437">reviewed here</a>.

How It Works

This site, written by high school students, is packed with good consumer information for teenagers. There is information about buying goods and services, managing money and credit, buying a car, renting an apartment, and being a smart consumer. It’s well written, concisely presented, and easy to navigate.

In the Classroom

There are teacher resources included: flashcards, worksheets and quizzes. This site would be a great self-directed unit for a class on economics, personal finance or life skills. The information would be accessible to less academically-oriented students.

Show the kids, as well, and share a recent picture of this student-fascinating author.Share the section on keys to good writing with your students, as well.

There is a link to click for teachers at the top that shows how to get a free cassette of Avi’s readings. Share this site on your teacher web page to encourage young writers or as a feature when your class is sharing an Avi book.

How It Works

This lesson plan helps students understand the differences between characters. It provides nice handouts as well as some hands-on activities if you choose to use them. This lesson is very helpful for students who struggle to understand the difference between direct and indirect characterization, character motivation, static and dynamic characters, etc.

In the Classroom

Although they suggest a specific story (LaBamba by Gary Soto) as the basis for the activity, this would work with many different stories. The handouts are easily useable over and over with different stories as well. Lesson planss cover 5 days, but you could shorten that to fit your needs.

How It Works

Shakespeare’s comedy sometimes escapes students because they can’t get past the language. Using <i>As You Like It</i> as a starting point, students can look at different styles of writing, acting, and directing, thus involving them beyond the written word. Looking at traditional theatre styles also gives them a place to begin and teaches them something beyond sitcoms.rnrn

This can be done in 3 45-minute lessons or adapted for use with another Shakespeare play. The theory behind it is solid, and the site includes handouts that you can use or adapt to your needs. You will also find several study rehearsal guides and an assessment rubric.

Some of the highlights include video clips about Harriet Tubman, lesson plans and class activities, printable pages, reference information, details about signs and symbols of the Underground Railroad, and MUCH more. If you are teaching about the Civil War and the Underground Railroad - this site is a must see. Another interesting activity is the "Make Your Own Secret Quilt Message."
