This site is the definitive list source for yearly Newbery Medal winners in the field of children’s literature. Besides the list of the yearly winners and the accompanying honor books, the site provides access to previous winners dating back to the 1920’s. Information about the Newbery award is in the left sidebar along with links to other important children’s book medals, including the Caldecott (for illustration and other art).

In the Classroom

Use this list to help your students choose some new literature to read. Provide this link on your class website for students and parents to use to find quality literature. Consider starting your own class wiki with student-made interactive book posters on favorite Newbery winners and honor books using a tool like Canva, reviewd here.

The Blind Reader’s Page

K-11 0 favorites 0 promising practices http://blindreaders.info/ Last updated: Fri, 08/27/2021 - 11:48 share

How It Works

This is a "labor of love" site which has links to hundreds of resources for students who are blind or vision impaired and their families. They include spoken word resources, information on assistive technologies, speech recognition, Braille tutorials, and much more. Unfortunately, the site itself isn’t particularly disability-friendly, but the scope of the resources more than makes up for it.

In the Classroom

Include this site on the Teacher’s web page for parents to reference, or share it with teachers who have blind students. If working on a unit about blindness or the scientific reasons causing it, share the site in an interactive whiteboard or projector. The tons of resources it offers would also be a great source for any student doing a research project on vision impairments. If applicable, share the site on the class web page for such students to access it in and out of the classroom for research purposes.

AFB is a nonprofit organization founded in 1921, recognized as Helen Keller’s cause in the United States. Besides offering a number of educational pamphlets, videos, and other information, this site has two very interesting sections: a mentor database and the Helen Keller archives. The Careers & Technology Information Bank (CTIB) is a network of blind people from all 50 states and Canada who use assistive technology at home, at work, or at school, and are able and willing to serve as mentors to others. Helen Keller’s writings are not all available online, but you can read some of them, and there are photographs available.
