How It Works

This online glossary offers definitions and pictures of math terms. Click on the grade level to view terms and definitions that are appropriate for each grade level. Some examples from the 1st grade list include a bar graph, cone, minus, and pattern. Examples from the 6th grade list include absolute value, coordinate plane, Fibonacci sequence, and countless others. This is an excellent resource for all elementary and middle school math teachers. Even if you do not use the Harcourt math series, the terms are universal.

In the Classroom

Make a shortcut to this site on your desktop for students to reference as needed during school hours. Be sure to provide this link on your class web page and in your class newsletter, so students can access the information from home.

Listen to famous composer music clips, learn about the music families and the instruments included in each one. There are separate sections for students and teachers. In the Classroom

What a fabulous website to share the various instruments (and sounds) with students in your music class. Use an interactive whiteboard or projector, and turn up the volume! Click on the search/explore link at the bottom of the page to view a list of popular links in the site. Share the site on your teacher web page so students can visit again for a music "fix" with their families, especially since music classes are often so far apart.

How It Works

Are you looking for a new way to integrate spelling into your lesson plans? This helpful website offers interactive spelling challenges for grades 1-12. Students type in their names, and are directed to short stories. The stories are cloze passages, i.e. have blanks for missing words. The website will read the stories to the students, or the students can read the stories themselves. There is also an option to click on the speaker sign next to the blank, to hear the word that needs to be spelled.

In the Classroom

What a fabulous language arts resource - integrating reading, listening, and spelling skills. Project the stories on an interactive whiteboard or screen and have students take turns reading the story aloud to the class. Then have the students record their spelling words at their seats. Once you have gone through the entire short story, ask students to share how they spelled each word. Take a class poll to determine the correct spelling and have students take turns typing the "winning" word into the blank space. Or have teams take turns at the interactive whiteboard, trying to get the best possible score and "defeat" the other groups’ scores. You will see some arguments, no doubt!

This collection of nearly twenty interactive measurement activities was organized by a math specialist (former 5th grade teacher). Specific topics include telling time and clock math, balances, standard measurement, metric system, liquid measurement, proportions, coins, and others. Many of the activities can be individualized by choosing specific topics, difficulty levels, and various other options.

How It Works

This website is truly a rare find - combining math and reading skills. Although the main page is aesthetically plain, the activities are very challenging. Most are set-up as word problems that require reading, comprehension, math skills, and more. The "outline math problems" provide students with 3-5 choices. You simply click on the blank and the choices for the answers are provided. There are activities for primary grades (such as basic addition practice) as well as advanced activities for secondary grades (such as geometry concepts). Many of the activities require JAVA. Get it from the <a href="/tools.cfm ">TeachersFirst Toolbox page.</a>.

In the Classroom

These activities are perfect for an interactive whiteboard (or projector). You could also provide a link to this website in your class newsletter or on your class web page. Many of the activities would provide excellent at-home practice and/or enrichment. Challenge your students to answer a question of the week for extra credit.

Collaborative Projects

How It Works

Participate in engaging, collaborative projects for Science and Engineering education as you make science "real" from around the globe. Analyze water use in “Down the Drain” or participate in “Global Water Sampling.” Record your area’s temperature in “Global Temperature Data” to find the patterns between distance from equator and temperature, or investigate human traits in “Human Genetics.” While in the project, browse additional links that include teacher guide, project instructions, data, discussion areas, galleries, and references. Downloads use Word, Excel, and Adobe acrobat. Right-click and "save target as" to download to your computer.

In the Classroom

To participate in the collaboration, complete the registration and enter data during the project window. What to do if you are not in the window time frame? Generate your data but compare instead of posting to the project. For an example, use the Human Genetics collaboration to survey the dominant traits present in your class. Students analyze their data and compare to the downloaded National data. Use the data from any collaboration for presentations, create recommendations (water use), and apply information to student lives. An interactive whiteboard would be a terrific tool for comparing and creating comparison graphs. Elementary teachers will want to combine these projects with geography lessons, too!

This unique website teaches about various animals and habitats while allowing users to create new combinations of animals (for example putting a pig’s head, with a zebra’s legs, and a dog’s tail). Information is provided about all animals used in the "morph" of the new animal. Animals included at this website are the bison, bear, zebra, rhino, pig, monkey, elephant, dog, and cheetah. The program is pretty simple to follow. But for additional instructions, there is a "How to Play" link available. This website requires FLASH. In the Classroom

What a fabulous website to use as you teach about habitats and animals, then launch into a creative writing project. Students can use their own creativity to combine various parts of animals together to form an all-new animal and show what they have learned about how animals adapt to their habitat. Extend the activity by incorporating a writing activity. Have the students share their new animals and stories on an interactive whiteboard. Or even create a class book exhibiting all of the animals at "Mr. Smith’s Zoo". Remember that PowerPoint slides make an easy way to write and incorporate clip art, then combine and print into a big book.

How It Works

Children will enjoy these short interactive stories on a variety of high-interest subjects such as animals, magic, holidays, princesses etc. Some stories rhyme and some have lovely, hand-made illustrations. To encourage children to write, a story tool called Adlib is available with hints about what the required parts of speech mean. Children who write using Adlib can see their stories instantly appear on the computer! Ignore the repeated mentions of "Kids Voyager" unless you want to pay for this read-aloud service. Unfortunately, the stories do not include reading levels. If you cannot tell, check them by simply copying the pasting the URL for the first page into <a href="/single.cfm?id=6986">this online reading level checker</a>.

In the Classroom

ESL students and emergent readers will enjoy seeing the words of the stories as they hear the words read by a big buddy or other helper. Beginning readers would benefit from hearing slightly more advanced readers voice the stories; try a collaborative project with another grade. Try recording students as they read, as well. Make this story site a classroom center or computer cluster option for reluctant readers. Another option: share a story on an interactive whiteboard so students can highlight words with certain consonant clusters, etc.

How It Works

Loud Lit offers "literature for your ears and eyes" (although the site’s visual appearance is quite plain!). This collaborative project with public domain offers recorded literature. You are given the options of listening to the literature, listening and reading the literature, or downloading the literature to an MP3 player. The number of items available for public use is constantly increasing. The current contents include novels, poetry, classic children’s literature, a few historical items, and classic short stories. Some examples of the available literature includes <i> A Tale of Two Cities, The Little Match Girl, The Gift of the Magi, The Declaration of Independence, The Gettysburg Address, </i> and countless others. A separate column lets you know about newly recorded items.

In the Classroom

This site is helpful for many subjects and grade levels. Have students use this website when they have to memorize poetry, the Gettysburg Address, or the Declaration of Independence. ESL and ELL students and many learning support students will benefit from the option of "reading" in multi-media format. Use the audio stories with younger students for listening skills. During a poetry unit, why not have students choose one of the poems to read and listen to? Have the students analyze and write in their journal about what they think the poem means. Replace paper journals by using a blog tool like Edublog, <a href="/single.cfm?id=13449">reviewed here</a>. Then have the students share the original poem and their own opinions with the class, making this activity a listening, reading, writing, and speaking lesson. If you are into podcasting, enhance learning by encouraging students to create some of their own poetry readings with commentary.
