Use this site to familiarize your students with current issues in genetic research. Have students choose one of the topics from the table of contents to read and research. Once they have an opinion about the topic, they should conduct research to support their position. If your students are inexperienced conducting research you may want to use a tool like Go, Ask, Achieve, reviewed here, an interactive and engaging tool for students to learn the formal research process. After completing a little research, form teams, by topic, and divide those teams into those who are in favor of the issue or those who are against the issue. Have student topic teams prepare for a debate with each other either with the class as the audience, or use a tool like Virtual Debate, reviewed here. Alternatively, students could view past debates on Virtual Debate to analyze pro and con arguments and effective strategies for debating.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member

In the Classroom
Have students begin with a rock cycle prediction chart. Before launching the Gizmo, have students brainstorm and chart how they think each type of rock (igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic) forms and transforms. After interacting with the simulation, they can revisit their chart and make corrections based on what they learned. Guide students through the Gizmo Student Exploration Sheet (available on the site), which walks them through the simulation's hands-on use. As they manipulate variables such as heat, pressure, weathering, and erosion, students can answer questions and track how one rock type transforms into another. Assign students to complete a "Day in the Life of a Rock" writing assignment, where they write a short story from the perspective of a rock moving through the rock cycle. They can complete this book digitally using Book Creator reviewed here or a template on Google Slides reviewed here.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member

Web Whiteboard - Henrik Kniberg
Grades
K to 12tag(s): charts and graphs (183), collaboration (144), graphic organizers (63), iwb (29), mind map (31), Whiteboard (11)
In the Classroom
Allow students to create collaborative drawings as responses to literature. They can map out the plot or themes, add labels, create character studies, and more. Share the finished products on an interactive whiteboard, projector, or your class website. Have a group of students create a drawing that another group can use as a writing prompt. Use Web Whiteboard as a brainstorming or sketching space for groups or the class to share ideas for a significant project or to solve a real-world problem. Use this site with students in a computer lab (or on laptops) to create a drawing of the story's setting as it is read aloud. As a creative assessment idea, have students draw out a simple cartoon with stick figures to explain a more complex process, such as how a democracy works. If you are lucky enough to teach in a BYOD setting, use Web Whiteboard to demonstrate and illustrate any concept while students use the chat and drawing tools to interact in real time. If you are studying weather, have students diagram the layers of the atmosphere and the processes that occur during a thunderstorm. Introduce this tool to students who are working on group projects. Alternatively, have students use this to work with partners or in small teams to complete complex math problems or equations. Give students a problem by typing it on their board. Then have them work through it together, noting all their reasoning and steps along the way.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member
