This is an environmental site and should NOT be confused with catalogchoice.COM, a consumer site FULL of advertising. Catalog Choice(.org) provides free membership to "opt out" of catalogs. Their self-described mission is "a free service that allows you to decide what gets in your mailbox. Use it to reduce your mailbox clutter, while helping save natural resources." If you teach consumer skills, basic economics, or environmental issues, this site is a real world place to visit with your students as part of your class discussions on marketing, advertising, and environmental issues caused by junk mail.

tag(s): advertising (24), earth (187), earth day (62), environment (245)

In the Classroom

If you teach about advertising techniques or information literacy, project both the .org and the .com sites on a screen or whiteboard so students can use a critical eye to see what the .com site is trying to do! Invite your science class to share the .ORG site at home and start an "uncatalog" drive to save some trees. Keep a running total of the number of catalogs your class has stopped and have students research the number of trees you have saved. As part of Earth Day or with your environmental club, share this resource with the entire school community. Encourage students to create tree-safe electronic "ads" for catalog choice (.ORG) that you can share on your class web page. Note: the site requires a free membership, so students should join together with a parent, especially since most catalogs are probably addressed to the adults in the house. Do not permit sharing of personal information (name and address) by students on the site!

Whether you teach insect basics or the details of biodiversity, this wonderful reference site provides a valuable online guide to insects, spiders, and other bugs. It was started as "labor of love" site by a "bug enthusiast," but has earned enough respect for Iowa State University to host the site. This guide is extremely informative, but don't expect animation and other "bells and whistles". The photographs are up close, the information is detailed, and the guide is very extensive. The guide includes information about classifications, names, habitats, pronunciations, sizes, life cycles, foods, Internet references, and more. "Bug" enthusiasts contribute photos and help identify unknown creatures!

tag(s): habitats (113), insects (64), spiders (9)

In the Classroom

What a fabulous tool to use for online research about bugs. Students will love the close-up graphics. You may use images from the site that state: "Students are permitted to use images for school projects. Educators are permitted to use images for presentations given to their students." Simply click the photographer's name under a photo to read the terms that photographer specifies. The main contributor,Troy Bartlett, includes this permission. Note that such permission does NOT mean that you can use the photos on web sites or in publications. Ask your students to create a digital "bug collection" or collect bugs to show concepts such as adaptations in a PowerPoint or poster. If you have a good digital camera, contribute some class photos to the projects, too! You could even make your own "bug guide" on a wiki.

Are you looking for a unique way to grab the attention of your teenage students? This interesting website explores the connection between hair and science. Correlations are made between bad hair days and the weather. Three of the "hands on" activities include building a hair hygrometer, the healthy hair test, and creating curls. Some of the articles feature interactive elements that require Flash, but there is still plenty to learn about healthy hair at this site.

tag(s): air (26), weather (170)

In the Classroom

Although this website doesn't have many "bells and whistles" (it dates back to 1998), the content could be very interesting in a chemistry or other secondary science class. This website takes a "teenage friendly" topic and brings it into the science classroom. There are many higher-level science topics within the text of this website. Invite students to try the experiments and even to use technology to create more up-to-date illustrations of the concepts for a health or science fair display.

This informative website provides numerous science topics all involving the human body. The links are basically articles (some possess interactive features). Specific topics/articles include self-portrait silhouettes, your body in your mind's eye, watching the brain at work, and peering inside the body (specifically the common techniques used to look inside the human body). Some of the techniques highlighted include PET scan, angiography, CT scan, ultrasound, fiber-obtic imaging, and others.

tag(s): brain (59), human body (97), sound (71)

The articles each contain some unique "hands-on" experiments to provide real-world connections for curriculum concepts. Many of the activities would create a great anticipatory set for a new lesson on body systems, health, perception, technology, the brain, biochemistry, and more. Some of the articles have a "print this article" option, for those teachers wanting to provide their students with a hard copy of the article.

If you require a notebook for your course, this is the perfect tool. Share the link from your teacher web page so students can create their own, customized sheets. Be sure to demonstrate how it works, then "write" a sample set of Cornell-style notes by sharing it on your interactive whiteboard so students can see how to use them! Learning support and study skills teachers will love this one. Middle school science and social studies teachers should encourage a consistent note-taking system like this so all students can find what works for them. Perhaps try different variations until students figure out which is best.

This all-encompassing atlas site provides a broad variety of information and activities. The subject areas include agriculture, biology, boundaries, climate, environment, geology, government, history, mapping, transportation, people, and water. All of the subjects incorporate the United States (for example, the agriculture pages discuss the agriculture of the USA). The map features are phenomenal and include both printable maps and "dynamic maps" which are interactive and awesome! Some of interactive maps include topics such as relief and elevation, West Nile virus, volcanoes and more. This site is a perfect addition to any science class that is studying volcanoes, climate, biology and more. It is also useful in a geography class studying the various uses and types of maps.

tag(s): agriculture (52), climate (99), environment (245), geology (59), maps (222)

Have your students work in cooperative learning groups to investigate the "dynamic maps". Assign each group a topic to explore (there are 7). Have the students research the information using the maps and then report their findings to the class, perhaps displaying examples on a projector or interactive whiteboard. In teaching any of the related subjects, using a projector to share a map will make the content more "real," such as displaying the butterfly layer in the map maker so students can see how the butterfly population their home state compares with other locations.

This easy-to-understand web and mobile app tool allows you or your students to enter vocabulary terms and definitions to create electronic flashcards and quizzes to enhance word study in any language or content area. Students may choose to create study sets, electronic tests, or a networking page, which allows them to interact and learn with others who share the same interests. Teachers or students can create groups to share word lists. Use this tool from any device or move between several devices and still access your work. The iOS and Android app practice tests can include multiple-choice, true/false, or written questions. Turn on "Instant Feedback" (new feature for the apps) that will give real-time feedback on right/wrong answers as you go, or wait and get your score at the end. As wonderful as this technology is, the most remarkable thing about Quizlet might be in its history--its creator was a high school student who tells his inspiring story and shares his blog through links at this site.
This site includes advertising.

tag(s): DAT device agnostic tool (134), flash cards (46), Formative Assessment (48), quiz (57), spelling (96), study aid (175), vocabulary (260), word study (59)

In the Classroom

Membership asks for an email. Email allows you to notify others that you want to share a word list or activity with them. If students cannot have their own email accounts, consider using a "class set" of Gmail subaccounts, explained here. This tells how to configure Gmail subaccounts to use for any online membership service. This would provide anonymous interaction within your class. KEEP A LIST of students' usernames (non-identifying) and passwords, in case they forget them! If you already use Google Classroom with your students, it only takes a few minutes to get them set up with a Quizlet Class.

Quizlet has a very thorough "Help Center" to get the idea of how the site works. Save your "sets" and decide whether you want them to be entirely public, just for you personally, or shared with a "group." The new version of "study sets" allows you to scan your notes with your phone or tablet and create study sets designed for your specific needs. You can now highlight main ideas, underline key concepts and bold important study terms to create custom content. Create your own groups for each class or subject. Be sure to note the fact that you can upload vocabulary lists by copying/pasting from various formats--- a time saver! Use this tool easily in your BYOD classroom since all students will be able to access it for free, no matter what device they have.

Content and English teachers may set up their personal network of users. Pretest your gifted students and allow them to "test out" of material they already know. Learning support teachers will want their students to create their own Quizlet sets and help learn them in the process! Teachers may create their own sets of words, or let students do the work for themselves and each other. Use the interactive whiteboard for quick flashcards or electronic testing using your sets. World language and ESL/ELL teachers will find many word sets already built and ready to use at this site. If you team teach with others at your grade level, take turns making the online Quizlets to accompany your science or social studies chapters. Be SURE to share this tool on your teacher's web page for students to use at home.

Be sure to see the classroom quiz game for groups, Quizlet Live (from the creator of Quizlet), reviewed here.

Connect students with African wildlife conservation through stories, field programs, educational initiatives, and current conservation work led by the Kenya-based nonprofit WildlifeDirect. The site introduces endangered species, conservationists, human-wildlife coexistence, habitat protection, climate action, wildlife law, and community-based solutions, with a strong emphasis on African perspectives and youth involvement. Its Education and Outreach section highlights Wildlife Warriors Kids, conservation field experiences, citizen science, biodiversity studies, activity and fact books, teacher materials, and the WildlifeDirect Field Lab, where children participate in nature walks, habitat restoration, science, art, ornithology, and other hands-on experiences. WildlifeDirect also produces wildlife television and video content, including Team Sayari and WildlifeDirect Warriors, giving teachers useful material for discussions about conservation storytelling and African conservation leaders. If your district blocks YouTube, you may not be able to view the videos. The organization also reports on active conservation campaigns and current projects, making the site useful for connecting life science topics with real-world environmental action.

Have students choose an African species featured by WildlifeDirect and research its habitat, threats, adaptations, and conservation efforts, then create a biography-style species card with Trading Card Creator, reviewed here, which works especially well for people or concepts. Have small groups examine different WildlifeDirect conservation efforts, such as protecting elephants, reducing human-wildlife conflict, climate action, or conservation education, then post a problem, evidence, proposed solution, and remaining question to Padlet, reviewed here, for a whole-class comparison. Assign students a structured debate about a conservation challenge such as protecting wildlife habitat while meeting the needs of nearby communities. Require each side to use evidence from WildlifeDirect and distinguish scientific evidence from values, economic concerns, and advocacy claims.

Answers show three readings, Average Maximum Temps, Average Minimum, 24 hour readings, as well as longitude and latitude.. Depending on the area, other data includes rainfall, sea-level pressure, station level pressure, and general information about the area's geography. Searchers must use native language spellings of larger cities and must settle for information about the main cities of the world.

You can use basketballs and sticky colored contact paper to cut out continents and climate zones, or have students make the map on an interactive whiteboard using a globe projection and highlghter tools in different colors. Older students can use the raw data as part of study of climate and cultural differences, environmental issues, or related topics.

Got a curious student? Need a motivator to connect to science lessons? Trying to find real world applications of scientific principles? This site supplies volumes (literally seven volumes) of products and how they are made. Just click on the volume number and each list is alphabetized for your students' perusal. Don't just read the short excerpt about the product. Click on the product name to read full details on product purchasing, its history, and much more. Below the "Volumes" section is another section of inventors and their biographies.

tag(s): inventors and inventions (87)

In the Classroom

When it is 'science report' time, direct your students to this site, loaded with hundreds of possibilities. Better yet, as you teach science principles, first share how something works that uses the same principle (on a projector or whiteboard). Then challenge students to find other REAL applications of the principle and create a class wiki glossary of concepts with example links. Model this the first few times, then assign them to work in groups. Since this site permits reader contributions at the end of entries, you may opt to find a product that needs more research and allow your students to add content information to the site (with your approval, of course). Every science teacher, gifted teacher, or tech ed teacher will want to share this site on your teacher web page.

Start the first day of school or a new marking period with a getting-to-know-you activity from this great, searchable collection. The activities are designed for all ages, so some will not work well with very young ones (such as writing things on slips of paper). The site is easy to navigate and sorts ideas by group size and activity level for easy retrieval. There are also activity suggestions for Zoom if you use distance and remote learning. You are invited to submit your own ideas. Since the site is designed for general use, not for schools, some ideas may be impractical in a classroom setting but could be easily adapted. Substitutes - check out some of these icebreakers, the kids will love them....and you! Warning: By clicking the "Download Templates - Free" you will go out of the Icebreaker website to the Shift website that has templates (unrelated to icebreakers) for free.

New or veteran teachers who want students to get to know each other as they enter a new school (starting middle school, for example), want to observe them so YOU get to know them, or need to build better team skills with a challenging class or club, will find ideas to try. Mark this one as a Favorite so you can find it again, since "first day" activities tend to get lost in the flurry -- and in the fading memory -- during the year.

This user-friendly site provides a detailed explanation of the carbon cycle and its relationship to climate change. Students will be able to visualize the cycle by using the pictures and diagrams in conjunction with the reading. Students can follow up with the quiz/review at the end of the reading. Print size is small, and attention to detail is a necessity while reading this site.

Share this site on a projector with the entire class or make it avilable for review as a link from your teacher web page. If your projector can ZOOM in on the small "movie" frame, students will be more able to read the small print.

This site provides a good introduction to science fairs to help teachers, students, and parents. There are separate sections of information on getting started, choosing a topic, completing the project, displaying the project, and the Scientific Method. The section and links on the Scientific Method are quite helpful, even if your school does not do a science fair.

tag(s): experiments (66), scientific method (48)

In the Classroom

As you study the scientific method, use the science fair examples as exercises for students to identify independent and dependent variables for the various projects. Give students the links to "find" experiments and analyze them with a partner or do this analysis as a class, sharing the project ideas on a projector or interactive whiteboard. The whiteboard tools would allow you to consistently color-code and highlight the various steps of the scientific method to support students' learning.

Include this site on your class web page for students and parents to access as a reference. Consider directing students and parents to specific links on this site that apply to the science fair they are participating in.

This unique program is designed to provide opportunities for students to become more aware of our natural resources, to help keep "common" animals common, and to learn to read various maps. The website provides a great deal of information for teachers wanting to use this program with their students (see teacher information). The activities could be used in any state, although some already have active projects. This activity could easily be done locally as well, using a county map. The regional activities provide students with hands-on science activities, field observations, project design, and data management. Don't forget to check out the learning modules that offer lesson plans and standards.

In the Classroom

Use this activity to help foster an appreciation for our land and biodiversity. The maps would work well on a projection screen. Even if your state does not have a project, consider creating a biodiversity "map" of your community and annotating it with digital photos on a bulletin board or in PowerPoint slides.
