Although this site takes a bit of time to load, it is well worth the wait. Watch in amazement as you begin to move through space - starting at 10 million light years from earth -and get progressively closer to our planet in successive orders of magnitude until you land on the leaves of a tree in Tallahassee, FL. But the journey doesn't end there. A sequence of images leads you down into the microscopic world of leaf cells, DNA, electrons, and protons. Wow!!

These lesson plans take an authentic approach to understanding air quality. Select the Education for a good over view of the activities and resources. Choose from several lessons where students learn about what's in the air and investigate air quality in their school or community. Aligned to National Standards.

tag(s): environment (248), temperature (32)

In the Classroom

Have students contribute what they discover about air quality from these activities by keeping and updating an air quality bulletin board. Use a tool such as Padlet, reviewed here. Padlet allows you to create columns for posting in categories. Add columns to sort information about air composition, i.e. gasses, chemicals, particulate matter, etc. Exchange paper and pen and have students create blogs sharing their air quality learning process using Site123, reviewed here. If you are teaching younger students and looking for an easy way to integrate technology and check for understanding, replace pencil and paper and challenge your students to create a blog using Seesaw, reviewed here. Challenge cooperative learning groups to create videos demonstrating their inquiry science activities. If you are less experienced with technology use with your students, a tool such as Powtoon, reviewed here.

Google Maps is a free mapping tool for exploring places, planning trips, and understanding the relationships between locations. Search for an address, landmark, or business, then zoom in and out or switch to Satellite view to explore imagery of the area. Where available, use Street View's yellow Pegman icon to explore panoramic views of streets and surroundings. These images are not live, and their age and coverage vary by location. Google Maps also helps users find nearby businesses, schools, parks, and other points of interest, get directions, and share locations or routes. A free Google account lets you save favorite places and organize them into lists. The service works in a web browser and is available as a free app for Android and iOS. On a computer, supported maps can be embedded in websites using the sharing menu. For creating custom maps with markers, layers, and imported location files, use the related Google My Maps tool.

tag(s): DAT device agnostic tool (134), directions (7), maps (220)

In the Classroom

If you teach geography, this one's a must. It is also helpful for showing students WHERE a story or news event takes place. In lower grades, use it to show students the basics of their community. Teach map skills by showing students their own community. Zoom in on their street or on the school. This site and its more sophisticated cousin, Google Earth, are great on an interactive whiteboard. Set up a class Google account (or use student accounts if permitted). Have students create their own custom route plans to tour historic sites. Challenge math students to plan the most economical route to visit several vacation destinations, including gas mileage and gas prices. Have students create placemark files of the important places in the life of a famous person or the route traveled by a particular unit during the Civil War. Have student groups create placemarker files to show environmental sites, habitats, landforms, or anything you can place on a map. Embed projects in a class wiki using the handy embed code offered as a sharing option. Not comfortable with wikis? Check out TeachersFirst Wiki Walk-Through.

Bring energy and water conservation out of the textbook and into students' homes with GetWise, the online resource for LivingWise'®, WaterWise,"?, EnergyWise'®, and related education programs developed by AM Conservation. The site supports hands-on learning about natural resources, renewable and nonrenewable resources, energy and water efficiency, and household conservation. Participating classrooms may receive student guides, take-home workbooks, teacher materials, and kits containing practical conservation products such as LED bulbs, efficient showerheads, and faucet aerators. Teachers can also access additional activities, educational links, FAQs, enrollment information, and state academic standards, although some digital teacher materials require a program login. Availability depends on sponsorship in the school's area, and program kits are limited each school year.

tag(s): conservation (110), energy (136), natural resources (35), STEM (388), sustainability (61), water (102)

In the Classroom

Have students conduct a home energy or water-efficiency audit using ideas from GetWise, then compare their findings in small groups and identify three conservation changes that could make the greatest difference. Invite pairs to calculate or estimate how small household conservation changes could reduce energy or water use over a week, month, or year, then explain which change they would recommend to a family and why. Assign small groups different conservation topics and have them create an informational flyer or presentation with Adobe Creative Cloud Express, reviewed here, which supports flyers, presentations, social media posts, and more. Require each product to include a problem, supporting facts, and practical actions families can take.

This online tutorial walks students through the basics of DNA, the cell cycle, and mitosis. Each step of cell division is introduced with a brief description and illustration. Includes a short animation of mitosis, a review quiz, and a vocabulary list. Though the mitosis animation requires Flash, nothing else does. There is a lot to learn here through text, diagrams, and quizzes.

In the Classroom

Before using this site, you may want to assess students' knowledge of cells, DNA, and mitosis. Put together an assessment asking about basic information using a tool like Google Forms reviewed here, where you can use a variety of formats, including multiple choice, open-ended, images, and more. Then have students preview the first exercise for words they don't know and create flashcards using Cram - Online Flashcards, reviewed here. After completion of the exercise, ask students to reflect on their learning using Gravity, reviewed here. Gravity allows students to share video responses through collaborative comments and discussions. Require students to comment on at least 3 other students' learning reflections. Be sure you've coached students in proper discussion etiquette, whether online or in class.
